How often do you cut your dog's nails?
LukIa's grow so fast--they look like talons right now. I had them cut three weeks ago....I just called and left a message to see about getting an appointment.
Re: How often do you cut your dog's nails?
We don't do Gracie's often enough at all - hers grow like crazy. Not sure if you knew (sorry if you already did!) but the way dogs nails grow, the longer you wait to cut them, the longer the quick gets. So then you can't cut them as short next time. If you cut them more often, the quick recedes and they can be shorter. We are trying to get back into this habit with Gracie, as hers have gotten out of control.
Billy's don't grow that fast though, so we don't have an issue with him.
Does he not let you cut them?
I do hers as needed- generally every 2-3 weeks. She never had them cut before rescue and it took us a long time to get her situated and get the quicks to recede. Now she just lays there and lets me cut them but that took a lot of time!
Mine does not-- we take him to either the vet or a groomer because it's such an ordeal!
Well the dogs who need to be groomed professionally do so every 6-8 weeks, right? I don't know since I don't have one of those breeds- so I would assume it's fine to go 6-8 weeks between nail clippings.
Remember walking on the sidewalk daily helps file (some of) them down.
Our dogs don't need to be (and aren't) groomed professionally, but we do take Gracie to the vet to get her nails cut since she is horrible about it and with black nails its too easy for us to get the quick. But she needs to go waayyy more often than 6-8 weeks since her nails grow so fast. We just hardly ever go as often as we should hehe.
And we don't have sidewalks. Our dogs get a ton of exercise, but it's in our yard.
I do my pups every other weekend---so about every 2 weeks.
I had a dog whose nails were very talon-like, so I had to get into the habit of doing it consistently to keep his quick shorter.
Now that he's passed away, I just do so out of habit---one of my few good ones I stick to
Well I think we will probably take Luka to be groomed once a month? It is $20 for the vet to cut his nails (he won't let me do it yet...but maybe once he gets older) and $40 for a full grooming at the groomers complete with nail clipping. Plus he gets stinky--like dog stinky...you know what I mean.
And no sidewalks here! We have a huge yard that he runs around in, and I take him for walks over at Great Brook--but that is all dirt. I wish we had sidewalks.
I cut Brady's myself about every other week or so, I don't like to let them get too long. (And his nails are a light color so I can see the quick or I wouldn't do it myself.) I also file them after I cut them so they aren't sharp, you guys with dark-nailed dogs could do that, just get a really rough file!
Ha! We got the drummel nail trimmer thing after J cut Gracie's quick one time because he was too scared to do it again. We tried training her to like it, but that never happened. So we were still pinning her down to the ground just to use it. And it doesn't work at all - well it does but it takes hours because as soon as there is pressure on the file it slows down.
