PW: My very-own Hoarder

sFIL's mother is living with MIL and him until an apartment opens up in the complex she and late-grandpa wanted to live in. She's the one who had the spending habit that got them into trouble.

She brought a TON of food with her when she moved in. There is literally no room in their house for any more food. (The food I brought with me from our house is in the garage.)

Over the last few weeks, I've been discovering all the crap she has. This woman never *NEVER* throws anything away. I found a full, unopened box of Rice-a-Roni Long Grain Wild Rice that was dated 1988. And I believe it's original.

I also found a can of Canned Ham that's probably just as old.

There are old bags of unopened flour that I can't date, but looks at least 5 years old (probably older).

Stale crackers in a box that was just opened. Pepsi that has literally lost all its taste and burned all the way down my esophagus. Bottles of salad dressing that have separated and congealed. Pancake syrup that's as hard as a rock. Peanut butter that's got a 1/2 cup of oil in the bottom. Etc.

I'm going to talk to MIL about it tonight. There's no reason why that stuff needs to be kept and more importantly, potentially served. It's food poisoning waiting to happen. Maybe I'll just cook every night and throw a few things away each time.

Re: PW: My very-own Hoarder

  • She must be saving it for when she moves to the "mountain".

  • I didn't realize it at the time, but I dated someone in HS whose parents were hoarders. His name was Ben, and when I went over to his house they had one, narrow path leading from room to room. There were newspapers stacked to the ceiling. If I knew then what I know know, I would have interventioned theirasses.
