whores with fancy cameras

we're checking out cameras - not an uber-fancy SLR but not a point and shoot.  the two we've narrowed down are the sony cybershot and the canon powershot SX10.

the sony is cheaper (by about $100) and weighs less (10 oz vs 24 oz), while the canon has twice the optical zoom (20 vs 10) and has a longer battery life.  I'm thinking I'd probably want to carry the canon around less than the sony, but I'm attracted to the better zoom.  WDYT?

Re: whores with fancy cameras

  • I didn't realize there was something in between an SLR and a PAS?
  • apparently, they're referred to as "superzoom."  or some siht like that - I dunno, it's listed in consumer reports as such.

  • My friend, Stephanie, has one similar to what you are asking about.  Let me ask her what kind she has... stay tuned.

  • I have the cannon powershot and I LOVE IT. Great manual features too. Not super heavy IMO.

Easy user settings - I have a carrying case I usually throw in my big purse when I do take it out to use it.

I give the cannon a big thumbs up.

  • I also love the screen so useful especially for shorties like me. I can put the camera over my head and tilt the screen and still get a great shot. :)
  • I'm really sad that I'm just now finding out about these things.

I feel like my SLR is going to utter waste.  I don't know where it is in the house again.

you need to find it and sell it!  I'm impressed you were able to get $200 for your wii/wii fit, just imagine what you'd get for the camera.

thanks!  this model isn't listed on consumer reports, the one I'm looking at is the SX10IS.  I wonder if the 20IS is just newer?

  • I am not sure, but she says that the one she has takes amazing pictures and she is really happy with it.

  • Also FYI they're selling it at Sam's Club and Costco here for cheaper and you can't beat their warranties there!

Maybe Lithuania Costcos and Sams Clubs might also be carrying it?

  • Besides my SLR, I have the Sony Cybershot.  I really love it.  When I don't feel like hauling the big'un around, I bring the Sony.  It takes great pictures and I haven't had any problem with the zoom not being good enough.  GL!

don't get me started on costco, our membership was canceled by the ILs.

  • ssinca:  she says that hers has HD video and she doesn't think the one you are looking at has it.  might be only difference?

Oooo. That's gotta be it. Mine does not have it. ::;wah wah;:::

ah ok, that makes sense.  we don't need the HD video, but it looks to be the same price as the SX10 at costco anyway.  hmmmm...

  • a couple of friends that have the canon powershot series (but older models than the one you're looking at) and love them.  i have a sony point-and-shoot that is a POS especially for the price i paid for it but no experience with the one you listed.
  • Definitely go with the Canon.  You'll get a better quality picture in my humble opinion.
  • (1) I love Canon.

    (2) I'm about 75% sure that a new SX20 has replaced SX10 (for the same price?).

    (3) I'd look into a G11 too if I were you. (or you can buy me one if you choose not to get it)

  • I have a Canon XTi Rebel and we just had to put down our old Canon PowerShot that we've had for years a few weeks ago... it just died :( It was a great camera way lighter than our SLR, great picture quality, and nice to just throw in my purse/diaper bag and go. So now we're looking for a new Canon PowerShot but one of the biggest requirements was a battery that can be rechargeable. That was the only thing we did not like about our old one was always having to replace the AA batteries and we've found a few that do have a rechargeable battery that's similar to our SLR. If you can't get the deal through Costco, I found pretty much the same exact deal on WalMart's website: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=13341388 GL!
  • if anyone cares, I think we're going to go with the sony.  it received better reviews on cnet than the canon and is quite a bit cheaper.

  • If given the choice between a Canon and a Sony, I'd get a Canon hands down.

If given the choice of a Canon non-DSLR, I'd get a G11 for travel and an S90 for food shots.

I seem to be the only one saying Sony on this thread.  :-   I say go for it.  I love mine.
