Greenville any interest in Bunko league?

OK ladies, I had so much fun at LIAngel's Bunko night that I really want to start a group of my own.  (I don't think LI will think I'm "stealing" from her since her league already has it's 12 regulars and I was just a fill-in.)

Anyway, we don't even have the house yet, but when we do I want to start thinking about starting a Bunko league. We'll probably not start until at least September.   Basically the point is to get together with the girls, chat, eat, drink a little, and then throw in a bit of a game to break up the eating and chatting.  The game is simple... no worries about not knowing how to play.  The game is merely the excuse for the gathering (though the game IS fun), and there are prizes!

Anyway the way it works is you get 12 women who are committed to playing Bunko once a month.  Of course there will be months when you may be on vacation or are attending a wedding, but it's a general committment that you'll do your best to be there, and you'll let everyone know ASAP if you can't attend so a replacement can be found.

The other "rule" really is that everyone takes a month to host...  With everyone taking a turn to host, that means you only have to host it once a year.  If anyone wants to participate and doesn't have a space in which to host (if you live in a small apartment etc) I'm sure we can work something out.

I'll be glad to host for the first couple months so everyone gets a feel for it before we start hosting different places.

Anyway, I'm going to be recruiting my cousin's wife and a few ladies I've met through her. (she lives near fairview road in Simpsonville)  I'd love to have any of you join in too.  I just thought I'd post this and see if anyone is interested.

God willing, I will be living in the five forks area of Simpsonville (out on Woodruff road, about 8 minutes from the Woodruff road Wal*Mart.)

Re: Greenville any interest in Bunko league?

  • I'm not sure what Bunko is but sounds fun to do. I would be interested. I know you said once a month but are they typically done on weekends or weeknights? just curious (bc I get off later than most people).

If it is alright I might see if my sister is interested? She is a stay at home mom and I know she needs to get out! (she's our general ages...25)

  • Sure your sister in law is welcome too!  LIAngel's league meets on Friday nights at 8:00.  I don't knwo if she has the time or desire to be in 2 leagues but if so I think friday at 8:00 is a pretty good time in general... we'd just ned to have it on one of the 3 Fridays not claimed by her existing league.

I'm open to about any day/time though.  Except Sundays which are generally bad for me. We have church at 11am and small group in the evenings.

The basics of Bunco are you play at a table of 4 and you are partners with the person across from you.  You have three dice.  The first round you are rolling for 1's.  you roll all 3 dice at the same time.  If you don't get any 1's you get NO points and you pass the dice to the person to your left.  They roll.  If you DO get any ones, you count how many you got and then you roll again.  You get to keep rolling and keep counting 1's until you don't roll any.  If you are on the first round (1's) and you get 3 ones in one roll that is a Bunko and you get 21 points and your partner gets 5.  If you are rolling for 1's and you roll 3 of any other number in a single roll that is a Binko and is worth 5 points.

Where it gets a little confusing is that the head table is the timekeepers, and everyone at all 3 tables play until someone at the HEAD table reaches 21 points.  Once that happens they ring a bell and you tally your score.  From there you switch tables...  Winners at the head table stay where they are, losers at the head table go to the bottom table.  winners at the bottom table move up.  Winners at the middle table move to the head table, and losers at the middle table stay put.

Anyway it's not even really as complicated as it probably seemed right there  There are prizes given out for the highest overall score, the lowest overall score, highest number of Bunkos and highest number of Binkos.

That's the game in a nutshell.

  • I wouldn't mind being in 2 leagues.  My league meets on the 2nd Friday of the month (unless we change it due to extenuating circumstances).  It's super fun, and for December we do a dirty Santa/white Elephant thing and everyone brings food so it's not all on the host.

We would need at least 12 people to play with 3 tables or 8 to play with 2.  Sometimes it;s a pain when people can't come and we can't get subs, so we play with a ghost (which sucks).

You explained the game quite well.   I've been playing over a year and I still get confused as to which table I move to  when I get kicked out of a table.  I just follow everyone else.

  • PS- you also need a Bunko set and score sheets to play

  • I'll take care of the Bunko set and scoresheets.

Once I got home and actually THOUGHT about the rotation process between rounds, it made perfect sense, but actually there in the confusion of everyone changing seats and tables it seemed overwhelming haha.

Thanks for the compliment on my explanation!  I dont know if it will make sense to anyone else who hasn't played though.

My cousin's wife Bethany is in, and her friend Heidi is probably in too, there are a couple ladies from our church who may play also (don't worry, they're not stuffy.)
