I Need A Cheap Sofa! Store/Dealer recs?

Hello all,

I need to get rid of my futon-being pregnant and sitting on a futon SUCKS I've discovered. But I'm cheap since we're on a budget. Where can I go to find a decent sofa (new) in PDX that won't cost too much more than 400? It doesnt need to last forever-when I have a budget for real furniture I'll go for staying power :)

  • If you can deal with used I'd check CL.  If not, IKEA.

  • I bought my last couch at Ashley furniture for 250  (+delivery and CA sales tax). I think? It was a nice couch that I really like. it was a microfiber, and I actually think they still have it since it's an ongoing style. We just sold it (it was getting yuck) and bought my sisters set though....but it's a good place to look. I know they haveone in Beaverton, but I odn't know about the Salem area.

There's actually an Ashley in Woodburn - I completely forgot about them!  We had a sofa from them before the set we have now and it was great, much better than what we have now, actually.

  • We actually bought our last sofa at Fred Myer. Not a lot of choices obviously, but they're nice, decent quality, and cheap.
  • We have Ashley furniture now, and like it a lot.. but we want to upgrade to sectionals!

You could also check out Mor furniture, they're new in town (replaced Wickes) and Costco, Costco usually has great deals.. :)

  • City Liquidators under the Morrison bridge.  Also check the consignment shops in Sellwood.

  • I second the recommendation for Costco!  I got my sectional there for $700 - a steal considering a similar sofa is sold by Crate and Barrel for over $2K.  The Costco in Hillsboro is the furniture warehouse.

  • I keep hearing commercials for Furniture Outlet which I think they have in Salem as well as near Washington Square mall on the westside.

  • I bought a really cute floor model at Pier 1 for $400. Also check Craigslist for new sofa's, there are a TON of dealers on there like Hollywood rooms etc.

Banner Furniture and some others on TV Hwy out toward Hillsboro always have great prices (most also advertise on CL)

I've also found great furniture at stores affiliated with America the Beautiful Dreamer. They also own the Futon store in the Westfield shopping center (vancouver mall) and it would be worth a call to see if they (or any affiliates) carry regular sofa's. The one store I bought tons from went out of business a few years ago but I've put pieces together from all of their stores.

And a few recommendations since you're expecting. Don't buy anything that has down or feathers and make sure the fabric is easy to clean. I highly recommend microfiber. My sister can actually remove and machine wash the covers on her sofa cushions. You will get a lot of drool, spit up, spilled milk, snot (lots and lots of snot) and very likely vomit on your sofa, sorry to be gross but its true. One of the best pieces of advice I've received is to cover the sofa in towels as soon as you suspect an upset tummy and doing it has saved my sofa twice now!
