I know it has been a LONG time since I have posted. I just have been crazy busy with at home life. I remember this fall some of you ladies ran a marathon or half of one. I have decided that I am going to join a friend of mine in the Rock N' Roll marathon in Seattle which is June 26.
I will start training tomorrow at my local gym. From stuff I've read and training schedules I've read so far it says to do cross training one day and rest another then running the rest..But also not to rest for more than two days.
Are there any pointers from the ladies that have trained before? Good shoes? I normally wear Nike shoes when doing running or sports.
Thanks in advance! Hope everyone had an amazing Holiday!
Re: First Half Marathon!
I'm jealous because I've always wanted to be a runner but I tend to fail because I have exercise induced asthma. I'm no help with training; the longest I ever made it in a running program was Couch to 5K, week 4. : )
The best advice I have is to make sure your shoes are really, really good so you don't hurt yourself. Did you go to a running store with knowledgeable people who watched you walk/run so they could choose shoes for you? That's really the best way to go, IMO. You want to get started off on the right foot (haha) so you don't have a reason to stop training.
Keep us updated, though! I'll cheer you on vicariously while eating my birthday cake (you're running on my birthday)!

That is AWESOME! I actually might do that one, but not sure yet. I've run several, and I'm NOT a born runner at all! I never run to beat a time, I just run to make it through and have fun setting a goal for myself.
My training plan is essentially this:
4 days during the week, do a 2-3 mile run (start with 2 milers, work up to 3, then 4 the last few weeks). One weekday do cross training or hill training. Weekend= one long training run. Start with 3 miles as your first long run, the next week do 4, the next week 5, and so on. Your longest "long run" should be 10 miles.
One day during the week (my day was always Sunday), rest. Your body needs a chance to recover. But essentially, you're running 6 days a week, for about 11-12 weeks. Taper off dramatically the last week. Make sure you hydrate, hydrate hydrate during your last few weeks and before your long runs.
Shoes are really dependent on your and your gait. Fit properly, they can make a world of difference! Go to a professional running store (like Road Runner Sports in Tualatin) and have them "test" you for a shoe. I'm an overpronater, so I need a very stable shoe. I've actually been an Asics fan for years, but now I work for the competitor, so I have to go with their shoe (or should, at least). I just found a great pair after doing some research.
But honestly? Believe in yourself and that you do it! Running is SO mental, and once you get through your 7, 8, 9 mile runs, you'll know you can accomplish anything!
OH...and you can also page kfishie on the Northern California board. She's a running coach and SUPER helpful with questions!

Oh, I forgot to mention this site, which is GREAT for planning runs!

Second this.
Very exciting adventure ahead of you. Definitely do your research and train "properly" and start slow to prevent injury. Get good shoes (get fitted!) and maybe look into a running group (they usually have a beginner group of some sort) to join. Groups or buddies definitely help with commitment/motivation plus helps pass the time especially during the longer runs (unless you like the quiet). Good luck and seattle should be fun!
My DH found a training program online at http://www.halhigdon.com/
To train for a half marathon is only a 12-week program. And he uses mapmyrun too to track his running.

My DH is a runner, and UI normally try to be when I am not uber pregnant!
I bought him a NIKE FIT kit for his ipod. It had a tracker you put on your shoe that coordinates with your ipod. It updates you on time, pace, and length of your run. It's great for road running because you know how far you have run!

I planned on getting one of these! I've got the other stuff on my ipod touch already.
Thanks for all the other information too ladies! You've been a great help
