Career Poll

At a weird point in my Career path.  Wondering how everyone else felt about their Career and if things have gone the way you expected.

1.  What do you do and do you love it?

2. Is it what you went to school for?

3. Can you see yourself continuing this in the future?

4. What will you do once you have kids?

5. Is your career now what you imagined when you were in College?

Re: Career Poll

  • Sorry, my computer went nuts and I couldn't answer my own poll!

     1.  What do you do and do you love it?  Right now I'm independantly employed doing translations as an independant contractor.  Thankfully I've managed to make a living out of this.  I used to work at a translation company.

    2. Is it what you went to school for?  No, I went to school for Accounting, did the whole Big 4 thing, etc.

    3. Can you see yourself continuing this in the future?  That's my question right now.  Do I go back to work doing a job I went to school for and I'm challenged by but have to be under a boss again, or do I expand my business and keep my independence?  Although I love my independence right now I'm not fully challenged.  But I know if I atleast try to continue to expand my business I will be able to continue having the independence I have now, which will be perfect with kids.

    4. What will you do once you have kids?  If Im still doing what I'm doing now full time I'll work around my children's schedule.  Thankfully I wouldn't have to work 9-5 or take mat. leave or anything.  If I'm back in the job market I'll have to do the mat. leave, babysitter/daycare thing.

    5. Is your career now what you imagined when you were in College?  No.  I never thought I'd be doing what I'm doing now but I'm very proud of myself for going out there and being independent.

  • 1.  What do you do and do you love it?

I am a special education teacher - yes, love it!

    2. Is it what you went to school for?

    Yep!

    3. Can you see yourself continuing this in the future?

I hope so, it is pretty easy to get burned out. However, it will be starting a new position this year that won't be as physically demanding as my last position. That should help me out.

    4. What will you do once you have kids?

I hope to stay home with them until they go to school. When they go back, I'll see if I can go back to teaching or figure something else out.

    5. Is your career now what you imagined when you were in College?

I think college does it's best to prepare you for whatever career you want, but you don't get a true dose of it until you get a job and experience it first hand. It is a lot of work, takes a lot of time and doesn't pay top $, but I do love my job. I get to know that I'm making a difference every day and have an impact on the future (sorry, corny, I know, but it's true!).

  • OK. I posted this once and it didn't post so let's try again!

    1.  What do you do and do you love it?

I am in events. I work for a small, boutique DMC here in Orlando. I am an Event Manager and absolutely love my job. I have AMAZING benefits and flexibilty which make me love it even more. For instance, I get 20 paid vacation days and if I ever work a weekend or holiday (which can happen in this industry) I get those days back as vacation days. For example, I took about 3 weeks off for the wedding and honeymoon and still have 10 vacation days. This also includes my vacation time in August to go to ATL. I also am working from home today - just because :)

    2. Is it what you went to school for?

I went to school for Advertising and Public Relations with a minor in Marketing. For this job, I should have majored in hospitality/event management.

    3. Can you see yourself continuing this in the future?

Absolutely. I love my job and can see myself doing this for the next 10 years. There is room for growth in my company which always makes it appealing. I was one of 4 when the company started.

    4. What will you do once you have kids?

Thankfully, my company is owned by a UK company so we have LOTS of UK benefits. Once I have kids, I get 1 year mat. leave with 6 months pay. It's great because the hubby and I planned for me to stay home with our kids for at least the first year because we didn't want to put them in daycare so young. Once that's over, I will work from home 3 days a week and work at the office 2 days a week until they start school. I will then switch to only working 9-2 in the office. I want to be able to drop my kids off at school and pick them up.

    5. Is your career now what you imagined when you were in College?

Yes and No. When I was in school I wanted to work for a big ad agency. Unfortunately, those are only in Chicago and NYC. Neither one of those appeal to me for living purposes. I always knew I would be behind the scenes in a creative aspect.

  • 1.  What do you do and do you love it? I am a Stay-at-home-mom  I love every second of it!

    2. Is it what you went to school for? Actually, no... I was in my 2nd year at VCC when I left.  My Pre-Major was Radiologic Sciences

    3. Can you see yourself continuing this in the future?  for a few more years...then I am going to finish up school!

    4. What will you do once you have kids? I already have kids

    5. Is your career now what you imagined when you were in College? Nope....I thought I would be done with school before I had kids...

At a weird point in my Career path.  Wondering how everyone else felt about their Career and if things have gone the way you expected.

    1.  What do you do and do you love it? Paralegal; I do not love it, but it has its days

    2. Is it what you went to school for? Nope, I wanted to be, and still want to be, a Nutritionist

    3. Can you see yourself continuing this in the future? I give it another year, tops.  8 is enough

    4. What will you do once you have kids? At home mom at least first 4 years.  One of reasons we have waited this long for first child is so we would be more financially stable for me to do that.

    5. Is your career now what you imagined when you were in College?  Nope! Not at ALL.

  • 1.  What do you do and do you love it? I am a professional actress as well as a drama teacher, acting coach, director, and writer.

    2. Is it what you went to school for? Yes, I went to school for Education and Theatre

    3. Can you see yourself continuing this in the future? I am doing what I love -- so yes!! Granted, I would love to win the lottery and just travel around and act whenever I wanted and not have to teach all the time.

    4. What will you do once you have kids? We aren't having kids.

    5. Is your career now what you imagined when you were in College? Pretty much. I don't think I was going to write as much . . . and that is soemthing I do all the time. Writing a play isn't always easy, but I have to come to love it.

  • 1.  What do you do and do you love it?
I'm a Real Estate Title Closer. I do love it. But...it has that word, real estate :-(   With everything being so bad work has come to a screeching hault! Its got me thinking a lot lately and I don't know how much longer to stick it out. I work part time and I like the flexibility but the paycheck is not sooo great anymore. I'm making as much as I was making in Miami as full time, but its just not enough anymore. Everything has inflated so much that it doesn't seem like such great pay anymore.

    2. Is it what you went to school for?
No. To be in title insurance you don't need a degree just experience and eventually a license. I went to school for Business. Which is as broad as they come.

    3. Can you see yourself continuing this in the future?
I'd like to say yes, but I don't think so. I have no benefits, no paid time off, I'm just a part time EE. I've always wanted to work with children, my goal was to be a teacher but I stopped and changed to business because the real estate field swept me off my feet and I wanted to own my own buiness like a title company or something. Just yesterday I signed up to volunteer at JMJ life center and they give Moms alternatives to abortion (no flames please!). I really think I found my calling. That's why I'm looking into sonography. I mean I would love to be there when Moms find out what they're having and the center is in need of techs! So lets see I'd really like to line up a plan B b/c I have to be realistic, if things get any worse I might get that dreaded phone call.

    4. What will you do once you have kids?
I do not know. That's another reason I want a plan B. Like I said I have not benefits and that includes maternity leave :-( I's like to raise my own children...one can only hope.

    5. Is your career now what you imagined when you were in College?
Not really b/c its a broad major. I did learn a lot that I've implemented at my current job.

Jenny I'm super jealous of your job!!!! UK has AWESOME benefits. Honestly Manny and I have talked about moving out of the country. It probably won't happen but we've given it some serious thought.

At a weird point in my Career path.  Wondering how everyone else felt about their Career and if things have gone the way you expected.

    1.  What do you do and do you love it? Right now I work in higher education, maintaining and moderating our student intranet. I love it.

    2. Is it what you went to school for? Sort of - my AS is in Comp Sci and then I have a BA in Liberal Studies (Art/Comp Sci/Psychology)

    3. Can you see yourself continuing this in the future? If I continue working outside of becoming self-employed, I'd like to stay with the school, but move up the ladder :)

    4. What will you do once you have kids? I have a kid, and I still work, but I am hoping to become self employed in the future.

    5. Is your career now what you imagined when you were in College? Nope, it's better :)

  • 1.  What do you do and do you love it?
I've primarily been a stay-at-home since Thanksgiving and I *love* every single minute of it. Best job I've ever had. :)

    2. Is it what you went to school for?
No, I double majored in marketing and business management in college.  I worked with sports teams during college, so I originally planned on working for a team or arena in events.  But, as I learned, the event planning field would not allow me to be the kind of mother that I desire to be.

    3. Can you see yourself continuing this in the future?
    Yes!

    4. What will you do once you have kids?
    Already have one :)

    5. Is your career now what you imagined when you were in College?
Definitely not.  I was a little go-getter who graduated college in 3.5 years!  I never thought I'd be a stay-at-home mom, but I honestly couldn't ask for a better job.

It has it's ups and downs just like any job but I love the flexibility and the fact that family comes first! I can't ask for a better gig especially when we start having some kiddos!

    3. Can you see yourself continuing this in the future?  Yes, I really do enjoy working with college students

    5. Is your career now what you imagined when you were in College?  I changed my major 4 times in college, but once I hit December of my senior year, this is what I knew I wanted to do.

  • 1.  What do you do and do you love it? I am a Pharmacist, as is my husband. We met in college. :o) I wouldn't say I love my job, but I do like and enjoy it. I can't say that I love it because if life didn't require having money, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't go to work every day just for the heck of it! I'd always rather be vacationing! ParadiseTravel

    2. Is it what you went to school for? Yes, and no. I have a B.S. in Exercise Physiology, but I loved college so much that I decided to keep going after I finished that degree and I ended up in pharmacy school! It worked out for the best though.

    3. Can you see yourself continuing this in the future? Yes. Although, eventually I would like to cut down from 40 hours per week to 32 hours a week, which is still considered full-time by my company and would allow me to keep all of my benefits.

    4. What will you do once you have kids? We're not planning on having any children.

    5. Is your career now what you imagined when you were in College? Yes. I definitely would not recommend going to school for so long unless you've thorougly researched what you will be doing!

  • 1.  What do you do and do you love it? I am a civil engineer for a local city and I love it!

    2. Is it what you went to school for? My degree is in environmental engineering but that is very similar to civil.  I started out doing environmental and my current job is more civil but I like them both.

    3. Can you see yourself continuing this in the future? I am sure I will do this for my entire working career.

    4. What will you do once you have kids? I would love to be a stay at home mom but I am the breadwinner in the family so I will take a year off and then go back to work.  My husband is a teacher so he may stay home but it's nice that he gets so much time off.

    5. Is your career now what you imagined when you were in College? Some of it is and some of it isn't.  It's always different in the real world I think.

  • 1. What do you do and do you love it?  I'm a neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP).  If you know what an NP is then, well, I'm that and I work with babies.  With my degree I can do anything from work in a pediatrician's office doing well babies check ups (Sleepzzzzzzz) to working in a Level 3 neonatal ICU, where they take care of the sickest babies and have the most variety of patients and technologies.  I used to love working at Shands (a Level 3 NICU), as both a nurse and NNP student.  But since I graduated, I hate where I work.  It's a very small Level 2 NICU and we also cover the newborn nursery.  The majority of my work is very tedious and happens in the nursery.  I also go to a lot of normal C-sections.  In addition, I work long hours and my commute is an hour each way.  I really miss my passion and feeling like I'm making a difference.  I used to love my job but I hate the role I play in this facility.  There are a few shining moments where I get a glimpse of what I used to do and am able to help a sick child or relieve an anxious parent, but mostly I just take kids away from their parents so I can examine a normal baby and then give them back.  It's beyond unsatisfying.   I want so badly to get back to "real" neonatal medicine and a "real" ICU.  Ugh, sorry to ramble.  Vent over.

    2. Is it what you went to school for?  Yep.

    3. Can you see yourself continuing this in the future? Absolutely, if I can find the right facility.  Could I stay where I'm at forever?  Hells to the NO!

    4. What will you do once you have kids?  Well, part of the reason I decided to become an NNP and not an MD was because of family.  I wanted to be done with school in my twenties, not thirties, and have a flexible schedule so that I could live my life.  But I can't see myself completely quitting work.  I enjoy my field too much to abandon it and I need to feel productive.  B and I have talked about it and I think we've decided that when we have kids I'll take a nice long maternity leave and return to work part-time.  Which means (in my field) I'd work about 24 hours per week, or around 2-3 days per week.  To me that sounded like a good compromise.

    5. Is your career now what you imagined when you were in College?  It's better.  I also always thought I'd do something with kids or something in obstetrics.  But in nursing school when I stumbled on the NICU, I fell in love with these babies.  I knew that was where I was meant to be.  I feel like I "fell" into my career and am so lucky.  Now if I can just go back to a place where I can do what I love. . . .

  • 1.  What do you do and do you love it?  Im a Customer Service Rep

    2. Is it what you went to school for?  nope.  Criminal Justice

    3. Can you see yourself continuing this in the future?  Yes unless something comes up.  We get 4wks vacation, 5 FH, 7 sick days and  bid for shifts so we can change up if needed.

    4. What will you do once you have kids?  1st one on the way!  Jerrry and I work for same co. so we have already switched shifts so we will work opposite so someone is always home with the baby.  We dont want to put our child in daycare so this is the only option as we cant afford to quit altogether.

    5. Is your career now what you imagined when you were in College?  Nope!  I do like my job.  However with the changing times things are extremly tuff.  I will say after 14 years I have never seen this kind or many changes.  But we have to roll with it and see where it goes.

  • 1.  What do you do and do you love it? I'm a "Lead Instructional Designer". Basically, I develop computer-based training for different clients. Right now, it happens to be training the Marines how to operate humvees and use night vision goggles and thermal detection devices. LOL!!!

    2. Is it what you went to school for? Yeah, it's one portion of what I learned in school.

    3. Can you see yourself continuing this in the future? Instructional Design, yes. For the military? no. I'd rather get back into soft skills training. Right now, the money is in the military

    4. What will you do once you have kids? Instructional Design CAN be done from home with some companies. But I'm not sure I want to stay at home anyway. So, it doesn't really matter what I do, since I will be going to work anyhow.

    5. Is your career now what you imagined when you were in College? NOT AT ALL. But you know - it's where the job market took me! Meh.

  • 1.  What do you do and do you love it? I work in Retail Management at Disney.  I love some parts and I could without others, but it pays the bills and overall I enjoy going to work.

    2. Is it what you went to school for? Not at all.  Technically, I don't need a degree for what I do.  But with a degree in International Relations and Political Science, I wasn't qualified for too much besides more school.  Big Smile

    3. Can you see yourself continuing this in the future? I am close to finishing my MBA so with any luck I'll be moving into a role with finance in the next 6 months or so.

    4. What will you do once you have kids? I will most likely continue to work as we can't afford for me to stay at home.  A job that would let me work from home for a few days a week would be ideal, but we'll see.  My mother in law is retiring this year and will probably help us out.

    5. Is your career now what you imagined when you were in College? Never in a million years - I intended to go to law school and work in international corporate law.  I decided to take a year off before school and play at Disney - but I didn't want to stop having fun, so I stayed!
