s/o reducing paper towels...

What do you use for napkins at meals?  I have cloth napkins but last time I busted those out FI looked at me suspiciously and said "You're not pregnant are you?"

We've always just used the little paper ones but I'm interested in switching to something else.

TIA!

Re: s/o reducing paper towels...

  • We use cloth napkins. Sometimes when we have people over for dinner and we give them a napkin they say it's too fancy and ask for a paper napkin. :-)
  • lol @ cloth napkins = preggo

Cloth napkins, or nothing. I mean, I'm not the messiest eater. I grew up with cloth napkins so its normal to me.

Haha I can see that happening for us too :)  I think I will make us some out of some leftover fabric I have and then maybe I won't feel like they are so fancy.

  • Cloth is my next green project. We have paper now but as soon as my order comes in we will be rolling in cloth napkins.

I am making a portion of them "fancy" for nice meals (with embroidery etc), and the rest are going to be fun prints. This way it will hide stains a bit better and if someone says "ooooo I don't do fancy" I get to use the phrase "since when are firetrucks and pink bunnies fancy?"

  • Dish towels.  I have a ton.  We have napkins too, but use them less often.
    nothing
  • Cloth napkins or dish towels. It is so darn easy to just grab the dish towel.

  • i have several sets of cloth napkins. most are not fancy. if you don't iron them they look even less fancy if you are worried about that.

    And this.

  • Thanks ladies!  I'm definitely going to incorporate the cloth napkins I already have and start making more with my leftover fabric scraps.  I think the hardest part is going to be breaking the habit of reaching for the paper towels/paper napkins.

    Put them out of reach!

  • I just started making some cloth napkins for myself, but I eat at MIL's house several times a week and she insists on giving everyone a paper towel to use as a napkin.  FIL tears his into pieces so he can save most of it for later (she always tries to throw away his stash) and often mine isn't dirty at all and she still throws it away.  I think my next project will be to make some for them, but I doubt that she would use them.
  • I use 7th Generation paper napkins. We live in an apt and don't have our own washer and dryer so it's easier for us to not have to do another load (it's $2.00 per load which is really expensive!)

    Maybe one day....
