POLL: How much would you charge?
My step sister's half-brother (got that? lol) wants guitar lessons and his mom is wondering how much I'd charge. I charge people I *don't* know $40... how much do you think I should charge them?
I don't want to come off sounding rude or expensive, but I also don't know them very well and don't want to do it for like $10 or anything...

Re: POLL: How much would you charge?
I voted for $30. Definitely make it worth your while. I'd say, "I usually charge people $40 an hour, but since your so-and-so's brother, I'll give you a deal."
I agree with this.

I also agree with these sentiments.
I'd charge the full $40. I'm a graphic designer so this may be a little different, but I personally don't give anyone "deals." It may sound a little harsh but people do expect the best no matter what they pay for it. This can end up making you a little resentful if you are giving it 100% and they are only paying $10. Plus, it takes time away from other potential clients.
I've also found that people, no matter who they are, think you are as good as what you charge, just something to think about.
I completely agree. DH does music and it can turn into a disaster when you start cutting deals, depending on how many people you work with. You probably also want to set up expectations at the beginning for when and how often they pay so it doesn't turn into "favors" later.
