Trusty CT Ladies..

So I just need opinions..

I keep my cell phone, on silent, on my desk at work.  I never answer it during work hours, if I get a text from someone and noone is around and I'm not answering phones/helping someone at the counter/in a hearing..I will text back (we all know it takes like 10 sec to do so..) .  Other than that, I let it sit and I return calls on my lunch break or after work.

Well, my co-workers phone went off today because he had a text..and it was first thing this AM and he forgot to silence it.  So my boss went on a freakout and was saying that shes not going to allow phones to be on our desks and she's going to make the Judge tell us this..implement a new policy..etc.etc.  IDK if it really is going to amount to something but if we go in to a meeting to implement this new policy I feel like saying.." I have a husband and kids, my cell phone is not going anywhere!".  Do you think it is okay to say this?  My boss makes rude comments when we get personal calls at our desks which I receive like 3 times a month either from DH or my mom and usually because it is important and can't wait til after work. So its not like they can say.."you don't need your cell, they can call your work phone.." cause they can't!  Anyways..IDK what to do/say if this comes up..am I totally wrong?  There is nooo way to prove my work has decreased with having the cell on my desk..soo..

Re: Trusty CT Ladies..

  • Why can't they call you on your work lines?  Its more appropriate.  They have to have some way for family to contact you.....and if they want to hire someone to triage the calls....so be it.

  • i know i'm not the most active poster on here, but i had to respond to this one lol.

are you a court clerk?  honestly, i can't picture a judge taking time out of his/her day to deal with your cell phones, especially if you guys aren't abusing them.  sounds to me like your boss is on a small power trip!  she's going to look like an idiot walking into chambers saying "well your honor, they keep their cell phones on their desks, even though they don't answer them!" i'd let it blow over...like PP said, your fam has to have a way to contact you.  personally, if i was told my cell couldn't be on my desk, i'd keep it in a drawer and just check it every 30 mins or so...OR i'd give anyone and everyone my office number lol

    good luck with it!

  • Ditto Mona or I'd say just put your phone on vibrate in your pocket...I would expect people would only call it during working hours if it was an emergency.  I leave my phone out on my desk on vibrate (and charging) all day, but it rarely rings.  I also have it synched up with my Outlook calendar so all my meetings go to it.

I do have to say that hearing someone else's cell phone ring in the office is one of my biggest pet peeves.  Some people let them ring constantly and leave them on their desks when they go in meetings so they ring and ring.  UGH, annoying.  I also work in a much different environment than a courthouse, too.

  • I agree with in the pocket on vibrate or in the purse. I can't see an issue with that. What are they going to confinscate them?

Heather, I have one coworker whose phone sounds like the phone from Wonder Pets. Drives me BONKERS!

  • Thank you guys for all your input.  So nothing happened yesterday with it, but IDK if the issue has been put to rest.  My supervisor is on a power trip lasting about the last 6 years that I've been here..its horrible!  From time to time I post about her crazy antics.  To answer some questions, yes I am a Court Clerk, I can't put my phone in my pocket cause I only get ONE bar of service when its in the one place on my desk and no service anywhere else.  My supervisor doesn't let anyone get personal calls here, my Judge on the other hand doesn't care if my mom comes to my work, comes in my office and sits down and chats for an hour..lol. My Judge is sooo easy going and my supervisor is waaaaay uptight/on a power trip.  The unfortunate thing is that my supervisor is here more often then my Judge because we only have hearing's T & Th afternoons.  My phone is always on silent and hardly ever rings during business hours soo I don't even see the big deal.  What set her off is my CW who forgot to silence his phone when he got to work and received a text at like 9:02AM and it went off and she bugged.  Anyways, I think I'm just gonna leave my cell right where it is and see if anyone brings it up in the coming days.  Did I also mention that my supervisor has her cell at her desk at all times, NOT on silent, ringing beatle songs all day?...I couldn't make this sh!t up if I tried....

LOL, we have one lady that has a country banjo playing whenever her cellphone rings.  It's usually her daughter calling and instead of getting the hint and just leaving a VM, she'll call over and over again.  We've danced in our aisles to the banjo before ala Country Eyed Joe.

  • This makes me laigh - I had a HORRENDOUS boss previously - he was a total as* - and one of the things he ripped into me for was my cell phone ringing - and believe me - it wasn't blowing up. The occasional ring - yes, but not crazy! To this day my cell phone is almost always on silent! I keep it out so I can typically see it when it rings and I check it often - but rarely use the ringer!

  • And not to mention..yesterday..my CW & I were talking about babies because an attorney came in and told us him and his wife were expecting again and I got up and hugged him and we were talking about it..and he was asking me about getting pg since he knows I got married recently, etc.  Anyways after he leaves the room, my boss says to me.."If you want to get pregnant and do that with your life, thats fine, but you aren't gonna be working here!" Like WHAAAATT? I think I need to start documenting this SH!T!
  • I haven't been over here in forever, but I saw this and need to comment.  Since you work with a judge I am assuming you are some type of government employee (probate=municipal, superior=state, etc.).  That being said, the cell phone issue should be handled by your HR.  I know phone calls can be restricted for government employees.  I work for the state, and it illegal to bring cell phones or communication devices in my place of work.  The thing that really bothered me about your post is your boss' comments about pregnancy.  He/she is a "public servant" and needs to be reported to HR or CHRO!!!  Please do yourself a favor and document everything!

I work for the Probate Court and IDK if you have read anything that has been in the papers recently about the Probate Court system but its all in shambles currently.  We are redistricting and what not.  Currently we do not have any HR department.  All judges can decide on pay/hours/holidays/any other policies.  So in a sense you can have one court open 20 hours a week with the Clerks making $18/hr and you can have the next Court open 40/hrs a week with a clerk making $10/hr!! It is not regulated AT ALL.  The Judges want to stay "in control" so any attempts over the years to make an HR department for employees to have a place to go to when their Judge doesn't take care of something, or if you need to go over your Judge's head, etc.  has been shut down/unsuccesful!  Sooo, I am basically SOL! fabulous..isnt it?
