XP: Indoor composting pail/system

I posted this on MM, but thought you all would have some great ideas too. I am looking for something that I can add my compostable items to and keep inside (under the sink probably) and then dump outside when it is full.  Would any old bowl/pail work or should I look for something specifically marketed for this use?I am not looking for a worm system for inside, as I am just a little creeped out about that (even though I know I shouldn't be).  Should I go for something like this: http://www.compostbins.com/compost-bins/kitchen-composters/scdhappyfarmerkitchencomposterkitblack.cfm?source=gbase&gbid=Black_Recycled_Plastic_SCD_Happy_Farmer_Kitchen_Composter_and_Bokashi_Kit&TID=SUS006this:http://www.distinctive-decor.com/rsvp-compost-pail.html Or this: http://www.amazon.com/4903-Organize-All-Stainless-45-Liter/dp/B0014RG5NY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1262734956&sr=1-3Or just a regular pail?

Re: XP: Indoor composting pail/system

  • i just posted this kind of thing about 5 posts down.  right now i'm sorting out compostable non food items out of the trash before we gather up all our trash.  the only other thing i was thinking of is having 2 smaller trash cans (like under a sink), one for compostable stuff and the other for regular trash.

I have the RSVP endurance silver one but i'm going to have to empty it every freaking day since it's small, if i use it for kitchen scraps AND paper type items.

since the non-food items aren't going to smell, i think having just a cheap open bin/can would be fine.  i will use my silver kitchen one for food.

  • btw cost plus was selling the silver kitchen compost can 25% off if you sign up for some thing in their store.  mine was less than $20, i think.
  • We have two ceramic pails for collecting compostables.  They have filters in the  lids.

I found them at Ross.  They don't look bad on the counter.

  • I got mine at Marshal's and it is the same blue as my appliances so it looks fine on my counter.
