Are you an early or late adopter?

I like posting things in here to spark discussion...

Re: Are you an early or late adopter?

  • As much as my finances allow me to, I tend to buy things right away.  I don't buy every new thing that comes out, but when sometimes strikes my fancy, I have to get it right away...if I can afford it.  If I had endless amounts of money, this would be much easier!

  • Unfortunately, I take after my dad and want to have everything right away...patience is not my virtue.  But, my budget doesn't usually allow me to buy right away, so it usually has to be out a while and have at least one price drop (or refurbished available) before I'll buy it.

Luckily my DS has more sense than I do and waits for reviews and price drops before he even considers buying a new gaming system, iPod, etc.  He also doesn't have any income other than an allowance or gift money, so I suppose that helps.

  • huge downfall of mine. but SO is a major late adopter. he is still waiting for the absolute best deal to get a flat screen. and now he is talking about skipping that all together and getting a 3-D TV when they come out.
  • I chose "Something Else", partially because of location.  So many things just aren't available in Canada right away, and certain things (like the Kindle) take for-evar to get here.

I do suffer from the "want it now"s but have been getting better at waiting.

For big purchases, like a TV, we're usually pretty early on the purchase, but we definitely wait for sales.

  • Good Poll! I am a late adopter, that way all the glitches are out and prices are down. :)

This. I'm a po' college student so money makes me wait, too.

  • It depends on the item sometimes. for some things, I can wait until the initial fad/craze has faded, but some things I need when it comes out. Lately, I've been a mid/late adopter for financial reasons.
  • I'm usually late.

  • Another mid-range here. My pockets aren't deep enough to be early on very many things and in some cases, I just don't trust a product until it has been out for a few months.

For example, Windows 7, I bought the upgrade before the product was released because I was happy with the Release Candidate I ran at home.

Apple iPhone, I waited quite a while for the price to come down and to make sure that there weren't any horrible problems with it.

  • I'm a mid range also.  Love the poll
  • For me, it totally depends on what it is and how much I'll use it (or how much I salivate over it when I first hear about it). For example, I got my new iMac right when it came out but it took until a year after it came out before we bought our Wii.
  • Meh, special snowflake here.

With gadgets, I'm definitely an early adopter. I had my G1 the day before they went on sale! But where software is concerned, I always wait. At least one year for a new OS, and maybe 8-9 months for some spectacular new type of software.
