I need some composting 101

I'd like to get started on an indoor one now and then do my outdoor one in the spring. I've read up on the outdoor, but I'm not really sure where to start with my indoor. Where do I keep it? Does it also need worms? What type of container do you use? Anyone do this with a toddler...I have a terrible fear of her finding and eating it? :)

Re: I need some composting 101

  • I need help too, and am wondering about the smell - DH is convinced it's a bad idea, both indoors and out.
  • I just got a SS compost pail w/carbon filter (for smell) for xmas...have not started using it yet because we don't yet have an outside area established to dump it.

I got the book "Compost this book!" from the library this weekend but haven't read it yet...  I'm not too helpful, haha.

  • I have an Earth Machine (http://www.earthmachine.com/) that I got for free from my local cooperative extension. We put it in the back corner of the yard, stir it once and awhile, and put leaves on the top. We don't have issues with smell or anything and it has made great soil for our garden. I put waste in it year round so I can't really say what to do indoor for now. We have a pail with a carbon filter in it that we use in the house until it is full and then one of us treks out in the snow to dump it in the earth machine. HTH
