Protecting plants from freeze

We are having temperatures about 20 below the norm for our area this weekend, and I'm getting worried about some of our more "tropical" plants.  It's supposed to go below freezing tomorrow night and not come above until Monday.  It should get down to about 17 at the lowest.

We have a hibiscus and a banana tree I'm particularly concerned about.  Other plants are cast iron, a gardenia, and some shrubs I don't know the name of (big help, I know).  Do these need to be wrapped or something?  We generally don't have to worry about freezes down here.

Re: Protecting plants from freeze

  • Sorry if this is coming to you late.  Bring what you can inside, and cover what you can't.  Your shrubs and trees won't die - they'll just lose their foliage, but your Gardenia, Hibiscus - most definitely cover with fabric - sheets work well.

Remove each day if your temps get above 40's during the day, and cover again at night.

Do not use plastic to cover your plants.

Trees and shrubs are pretty hearty.  If they lose foliage, they aren't dead - they'll bud out again when it gets warmer.

    Good luck!
