snow shoe rentals?

My husband and I wanted to try snowshoeing. Is there a inexpensive place to rent snowshoes from? Also, we don't have snow boots to strap into the snowshoes- do places rent those also? Thanks ladies!

(Also- if anyone knows good snowshoeing spots on Mt. Hood especially for beginners, feel free to recommend them!)

Re: snow shoe rentals?

  • I remember renting them somewhere in Sandy a long time ago but can't remember the place. On this website you can find some rental places though:

We went to Cooper Spur for our snowshoeing trip.

I also remembered going to a snowshoe demo day in the past where you can go up to Mt Hood and try snowshoeing for free. We just took a pair and walked a trail and returned them a while later. It was great. In fact, REI is having such an event this Saturday:

  • You should! It's fun! Also, I don't remember having special boots to go in them, but on the REI site they do recommend having waterproof boots. They could be any kind of boot though. I think I just used my hiking shoes.
  • REI rents snowshoes for a good price. You will definitely want waterproof boots, but they don't have to be anything special. Trillium Lake is a good place for beginners. It's a good length (you can do a short trip or a longer loop), fairly flat and manicured. You won't be out on your own though. It's pretty popular.

  • I went around Trillium Lake last year w/ a friend. It was the first time either of us had been and it was a lot of fun. I would suggest packing a lunch and taking a break in the middle b/c we went all gung-ho w/o stopping and I could hardly walk for days after Smile We rented shoes out of Government Camp, but I can't remember the name of the place, it was right in the town and it was really cheap. They rented out boots too
