Ok

WWWW(M)D?

If you knew you were going to both go to college AND buy a house, would you go ahead and buy a house, then go to college, or would you go to college and then buy a house? I'm leaning towards the first, but I'm wondering if that's foolish.

Re: Ok

  • Can you afford the house while you are in school? Are you going to be taking out any loans?

  • if you can afford to do both, home prices and interest rates are pretty low right now.

but in the end, do what you can comfrtable afford. if you are worried about money while you're in school, i worry your grades and attendance will suffer.

According to the research I've done, a home loan would be around what we're paying for rent now, with taxes included. I will be taking loans out eventually but starting out I won't need to, I can pay out of pocket.

  • I say go for it. Happy House Hunting!

  • If you can swing it, I would buy the house first. We are insanely glad we bought while I was in school, and I am working a very small amount. Had we waited, we may not have been able to get such a great deal, the amount of houses on the market in our area has dropped in the last 6 months, deals are still out there, but not as many.

  • Is there any chance you might relocate after completing school?  If so, that may affect the answer.
  • We bought when H was still in school, and it worked out. So I say go for it!

FI's job is dependent on being in this area. If we did relocate it would be across the country, and for his job, and only if he wanted to move to a different position. He loves his job (complete with pink bubble hearts floating above his head) and wouldn't want to leave it. I am going into the medical field, which gives me a lot of freedom.

  • In that case, if you think you can make it work financially, go for it!
