Best Marriage Advice...

I was reading an article on best ways to keep a good marriage.  And thought I'd pose these questions...

What's the best marriage advice you follow that you learned yourself?

What's the best marriage advice you follow that you got from another long married couple?

Re: Best Marriage Advice...

  • What's the best marriage advice you follow that you learned yourself?  One thing I always tell myself is to "Pick my Battles".  I've realized over the years that my dh and I were dating (7 years), that some things really aren't worth having a horrible fight over and before bickering to seriously pick my battle and see if its worth both of us getting upset.  Sometimes you got to know when its time to fight or time to compromise.

Also, just to have fun together.  The best part of being married is enjoying life together.  If you can't have fun together what's the point?

What's the best marriage advice you follow that you got from another long married couple?  Respect each other above all else.  This came from my parents and dh's grandparents.  Although I've seen my parents fight I've never seen them call each other names or disrespect each other.  My dh and I make sure to never play dirty when we fight.

That it is pointless to stay mad at each other. You should step up and apologize when you have done something wrong or said something wrong. Take a few minutes, cool down, and apologize. Why waste precious moments on being angry about a fight that when you think about it, was kind of pointless?

What's the best marriage advice you follow that you got from another long married couple?

We have two we try to follow and the first one is communication. Right after our ceremony, my dad's very good friend pulled us aside and told us the following: "Marriage isn't perfect. You will fight. You will get upset. The one thing you have to remember is to communicate. Without communication there is nothing." I truly agree with that and hubby and I try to communicate all our feelings! The second one I have to agree with NewlyMrs.M and say respect. I have learned that if you don't have respect, you don't have a marriage. My parents and grandparents were an amazing example for my hubby and I. His parents are the same way. Respect each other!?

  • What's the best marriage advice you follow that you learned yourself?  Don't get lost in the heat of the moment during an argument.  There are many times that something mean is on the tip of my tongue to say but I leave the room instead so I won't say something I will later regret.  It doesn't matter how much you apologize, your DH will never forget that you said it and they will think you actually believe it because you said it.  I take a bath or leave the house for a little while and come back to the conversation later the same day when we are both calmed down and can discuss the issue more rationally.

What's the best marriage advice you follow that you got from another long married couple?  There are going to be hard times but let the easy times carry you through the hard times.  This came from my uncle on our wedding day.  My parents inadvertently taught me that communication is extremely important, even when the communication is that you aren't happy about something because if you don't tell your spouse, how are they supposed to know until you are so unhappy that you do something stupid like cheat on them.

  • What's the best marriage advice you follow that you learned yourself?

    To stay best friends.

What's the best marriage advice you follow that you got from another long married couple?

To get on the same page about money and stay that way!!  To live a lifestyle that is always less extravagant than your peers in order to have nicer things later on (hopefully).

  • What's the best marriage advice you follow that you learned yourself? We have a date night every Friday night no matter what. we dress up and go to a nice place and dont let things get to routine.

What's the best marriage advice you follow that you got from another long married couple? My Aunt Penny and uncle Bill have been together for almost 40 years and are very much in love. They told us to never say anything we couldnt take back and that no matter what you do, you need to know that your partner is going to support you right or wrong.

  • What's the best marriage advice you follow that you learned yourself?

Together anything is possible. My husband is my best friend and he feels the same about me. That's all we need in life.

What's the best marriage advice you follow that you got from another long married couple?

Just about everyone told us the usual communication, respect. The one that stuck the most was "don't go to bed angry." We REALLY stick to that no matter how mad we are we always make up before going to sleep.

  • What's the best marriage advice you learned yourself?

Always talk it out, never play the "silent treatment".

Best advice from long married couple?

Our pastor had us read Willard Harley's His Needs, Her Needs.  I now give it to all my newlywed or nearly wed friends.  It discusses many things that each of us need and how our spouses can help fulfill them (in a nutshell)- it is too much to type here but I recommend it to everyone!!!

  • What's the best marriage advice you learned yourself? Communication, respect and taking time to enjoy each other are SO important. It's so easy to get caught up in the day to day routine, but you have to take the time to do nice things for each other and have little getaways together.

Best advice from long married couple? Never go to bed angry. It's better to stay up all night figuring out why the other person is upset. Never stop trying to resolve things. Also, we never leave the house angry. The other person always stops them, because it's easy to get into a car accident or do something else that is dangerous/stupid when you are really angry.
