First I would like to say I admire your pictures. I received a DSLR for Christmas and I have no idea how to use it. The camera came with a 18-55mm lens. Someone recommended a filter and lens hood. How do I decide which brand to buy? I am waiting for Amazon to send out my 5 Million Dollar bag. Is there anything else I need? Thanks!

Re: ***weemz***

  • Thanks!  The 18-55mm is a nice kit lens and perfect to start.

I don't think a lens hood is that important, but a filter will be a good investment to protect your lens.  I buy HOYA brand and just use an inexpensive UV filter, which is usually $20ish or less -- I use it more to cover my lens than for actual filtering purposes.

I believe a 52mm filter should fit your lens.  The easiest thing to do is probably to bring your lens to a camera store to make sure the filter is the right size.
