do you work at home?

if so... how'd you land your gig? i need a new job. BAD. i really really can't stand my job anymore. i've been here 3.5 years and i'm so done!

the thing is that we're waiting for DH's career at the moment (we need to wait on him so we can finally start TTC) but potentially he won't land a new gig for months if not a year (will likely require us to move). so i can't change jobs until:

(a) we move (or find him a job that allows us to stay put),

(b) i find a job that allows me to work from anywhere so i can change jobs now and it doesn't matter where hubby ends up.

any suggestions where to look or how to land such a gig? even being here a few more weeks seems intolerable. i know... its like everyone's dream to work from home but i thought i'd post and see if anyone has an ideas/leads cause i'm at my wits end!

Re: do you work at home?

  • dh and i both work from home. we were living in nyc and wanted to move closer to family. we convinced them to let us move back to texas (austin because its a big music town and we work in the music biz) and they let us. a year later one of our clients stole us from the other company - but we told them we wouldn't move to los angeles - that we had to stay in austin if they wanted us. they still gave us the offers and we are still working from home. so far, so good.

Dude, that sounds like the dream.  If you need an employee, let me know.  (Seriously, that'd be right up DH's alley.)

  • yea it seems like most people i know who work from home were in a position already with a company and convinced them to let them work remotely. i actually might be successful with that if we were moving but i hate my job so it doesn't really help to convince them... i need to convince a new employer! Smile
  • I don't, but of course aspire to get to a point that my side business can support itself/me enough that I can do it full time from home.

I was just going to say that everybody I know who has successfully worked from home didn't start whatever the position/company was that way and every work from home opportunity I've ever seen advertised seemed pretty sketchy.

    Good luck, though!

  • I used to work from home part time and part time in the office.

New VP = no more work from home.

It sucks ... a lot. Why is my company going backwards when every other news story I read is about how more and more companies are allowing their employees to work from home?!

  • got a technical background?  I'm a computer dork and we can pretty much work from anywhere there's an internet connection.  I haven't seen my office in a month, and no one even notices (my boss and the rest of my department work in NC).

no... my degree is in accounting. i've done primarily budget work the last few years and more recently starting doing more special projects/management analysis/process improvement type stuff.

  • I had to start my own biz to be able to work from home. (Of course, part of that requires me to visit clients at certain times, but those times are for the most part flexible, which helps.)  Unfortunately starting your own work from home biz means that it's best that you have either a year or two worth of living expenses saved up, or a spouse that can float you both until your business gets off the ground.  However, if you can figure out a way to do it, the rewards of working for yourself are boundless!
  • Both DH and I work from home.

DH sells his own software, that he designed. He also is developing an iphone game. He had to start his own business to work from home.

I actually work for the Art Institute teaching Drawing, Design Foundations, web stuff to college students. They have an online program and I work for them through that. I have been thinking about seeing if I can get a class at the Austin campus.

  • I used to work from home, I got hired to work from home, because the company didn't want to pay for my relocation and I was traveling a lot. We had an office in College Station that I would visit every now and then, but there were only 2 other people in that office.

I had to put 8-5, and we don't have kids, but I would have had to have child care, because of my interactions with the clients on the phone, you can't have kids/baby crying on the back ground.

I worked at that job for almost 4 years and I was ready to work in an office.
