Operation Chihuahua Airlift
The ASPCA partnered with Virgin America airlines to fly 15 chihuahuas from San Francisco out to New York for adoption. CA shelters have a glut of them; small breeds are lacking at east coast shelters.

Re: Operation Chihuahua Airlift
That is adorable.
But I have to wonder how expensive that would be and who paid for it? Virgin?
The article doesn't make it completely clear. Probably a combo of ASPCA funds and a deal on rates from Virgin. They are hoping to make it a long-term project.
I believe Denver just got a slew of chuahuas from LA shelters last month as well. It's hard to believe that there are areas that have no little dogs for adoption via shelters. My parents lost their chihuahua during surgery the day before Thanksgiving and they ended up going to a breeder because there weren't any small dogs in their area for adoption (I checked - I thought my mom was shitting me).
I offered to fly them one out from California.
