Groceries

I am feeling quite proud of myself this morning!  We've been doing our best to try to keep our weekly grocery cost down (meal planning, watching sales, etc.).  We were happy when it got under $40, but knew that we could do better.

I just got back from the store and bought food for two for an entire week for only $27!

Sorry if this is dorky, but I needed to share with someone and DH won't be home for hours!

Re: Groceries

  • That's awesome!!! Shopping in the mornings is great- no crowds at all. Over time my tastes have, um, matured, so I require some better than college foods. I'd say we average $50-75/week. I rotate grocery stores (no schedule... just who's got what on sale the week I need to go shopping)... Aldi, Wal-Mart, Kroger, Schnuck's. I go about once every two weeks for "the big trip". We may pick up one or two things in between big trips. And if we have a party/BBQ... yeah, out the window on food costs.

I'm trying to get us to eat a bit healthier... whole grain bread, a few more fresh fruits around, less processed boxed pasta deals, etc. It's a slow transition. I have definitely seen food prices increase! I remember Mac & Cheese at Hy-Vee in college 10 for $1. I probably bought 30 boxes at the start of that semester.

  • I cook so much more now that we're not in school. I'm not the best cook and I need to broaden my horizons, but we're definitely eating better than we did in college.

I read a blog where this woman feeds her family of 6 for $50 a week.

  • It's one of those things that can only have every few weeks. I decided to cook things that I had several ingredients for already. We stock up some weeks on things that are on sale.  For example, at wal-mart, ground beef is marked down the day before its 'sell-by' date, so a pound of 97% lean beef is $2. I've learned to use my freezer.  Plus, there are only two of us, so we can buy some things and have it last for three different dishes.

I succeeded in using up a bunch of the stuff in the cabinet/freezer.

There's a show on Food Network where she shows you meals that are all connected by an ingredient. Robin something. Having the same meat in more than one meal helps save money because you can buy a larger quantity at once.
