I know there are a lot of tax professionals on this board, just like each one of us is a doctor.
I am thinking about this whole certification thing that they asked if I had. I am eligible to take it, but I didn't do it because work was iffy on paying for it and I never really needed it. I looked into it and it will cost me $620. Several of the jobs I have applied for have said it's preferred but not required.
Can I deduct that as a job hunting expense on my taxes next year?
Re: I have a tax question
Ok, here is his response:
The question is, is she doing because it helps her find a job? Since there really is no peripheral benefit to certification other than increasing her eligibility in the marketplace, she can deduct it. The is one major caveat though, job hunting expenses are subject to the 2% adjusted gross income limit. In other words, she would add up all of her job hunting expenses, then subtract out 2% of amount of all her (and her husband's, if filing joint) income to figure out how much is deductible. so in this case, if she made more than $31,000 in that year, there would be no deduction.
