Entertaining Help

sFIL's 60th bday is next weekend.  MIL said she's having a veg tray, meat tray, this vegetable hamburger soup schit, cake and munchies.  I offered to bring something in the munchie category, but have no clue.  Please remember the bday boy requested the soup where you literally brown hamburger and dump a bunch of canned soup together.

I was thinking I'd make this toffee bark stuff that is mmmmmmmm, but don't know what to do for a "savory" munchy.

We are going down the day before and I'd prefer not to have to cook in MILs space.  I thought pasta salad, but it's not really a munchy.  So ideas?

Re: Entertaining Help

  • I'm always a fan of Paula Deen's bacon wraps.  They're a savory munchie that can be made ahead of time.

It's too bad that there isn't a board where you can go to get ideas about...oh, wait--never mind.

  • EK's taco mac - it sounds like something your ILs would LOVE
  • what about some kind of cheese fondue - you could have bread, apples, chips, etc. for dipping?

I make pigs in a blanket with mini sausages (not cocktail weenies) fresh jalapeno slices, and cheese - they're usually a big hit. I season the sausages, brown the, then use 1/4 of a crescent roll to wrap the sausage, jalapeno, and cheese. Just bake per the crescent roll instructions. You could make these ahead and reheat, put them in a warmer, or just serve them at room temp. You could make some kind of dipping sauce (or salsa) too.

FIL's wife makes a version of this every.year when we visit and calls it taco soup.  Brown ground beef, throw in crock pot with taco seasoning and a jar of salsa or some nonsense.  Serve with cheese and Fritos.  It's like a running joke between DH and me now:  "Oh, I sure hope she serves taco soup AGAIN this year!"

  • How about cheese straws? This boy (and your ILs) don't sound very willing to try things they don't understand. You could make some plain, some garlic, and some cayenne.

  • The bacon things sound good, but I'm not sure how they'd be after a day (I'd have to make saturday and the party is Sunday).  The jalapeno things wouldn't fly either.

Talk to me about cheese straws.  I've never made them.  Are the still good 24 hrs later?

  • And yes, I'd bet anything they'd love taco mac.

  • 6 they're basically cheese, butter, and flour, then whatever other ingredients you see fit to put in there. Paula Deen has a good recipe

Once they're baked they'll last for about a week or so. If you wanted to get supa creative you could probably find a dip for them but really they're just delicious on their own. Hers are more cracker shaped. When mom made them years ago they were long and thin, like straws. I think she had some sort of press, because they were perfectly round.

  • If you have a cookie press it might have a cheese straw plate. At least mine does.

I was just going to post this.  This is the only way I know of to get those long, thin, pretty ones.

  • I have a cookie press.  I assume I can mix the dough with a cutter instead of a food processer?  I'm thinking this is the right line of munchy.
