Why
Why does someone need 5 toothbrushes? I'm looking at DH. 6 if you count that he has two heads for his electric.

I was going to suggest it was the result of the dentist giving out toothbrushes and him not throwing them out, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Toothbrush hoarding? I'd hide one and see if he notices.
That was my guess, too. DH doesn't do this with toothbrushes, but he does with lots of other things: shampoo, soap, toothpaste, etc. If it's used up, throw it out; if it's not used up, then don't start another one 'til it is.
