Jack and Jill Luau Bridal Shower
I've been asked to plan my sister-in-law's jack and jill bridal shower. She and her fiance have decided on a luau theme and have asked my husband to do a pig roast in the back yard. I'm just trying to gather decorating and food ideas that fit the theme. Any cute ideas that will work for the co-ed crowd? Thanks!
Re: Jack and Jill Luau Bridal Shower
I can't resist anymore, I have to ask:
Who asked you to host and plan the shower?
The bride told you what the theme would be? Really?
I'm sorry, but people just surprise me every single day.
My parents have a big anniversary coming up, and I've been toying with the idea of hosting a luau-themed party.
Oriental Trading has a TON of stuff:

Something you might want to consider, in order to make it a little more upscale and less college party... I'm going to stick with a green/tan/white color combo, instead of bright colors. You might have a younger crowd where the oranges and yellows make sense b/c they're more festive. Just something to think about.
I have an idea where I want to set up an area where people can take photos. Kind of like the ones you take when you're boarding a cruise ship - with luau background. Maybe have everyone wear a lei and hold a drink in the photo. Know what I mean?
I would stick with a couple of fruity drinks and beer for drinks. Lots of fruit to much on. If you think your guests are up for it... how about a limbo contest?
GL!
I threw a luau a couple of years ago.
I bought cups from here: http://www.coconutking.com/
I garnished each one with a wedge of pineapple and an umbrella and straws. I had big pitchers of pre-mixed mai tais, blue hawaiians, and non-alcoholic punch set out on a table for everyone. We also had beer and water.
The tables where food and drinks were served where decorated with bright tablecloths and had grass table skirts.
The tables where people sat were decorated with bright red tablecloths, with a table runner that I made from hawaiian shirt fabric found at Joann's. It was bright orange with red and yellow flowers. For centerpieces I bought straw baskets and filled them with tropical fruit (pineapples, coconuts, mangos, bananas and strategically placed flowers. I wanted to do orchids but they were too expensive, so I just used alstroemeria). I also found citronella candles in bright orange pails that I put on the table.
I also bought thatched umbrella cover for our regular patio set.
I made flowers from craft foam. I basically cut a flower shape in red foam and then cut a slightly smaller flower shape in orange foam. I layered them and then poked a hole through the middle. I then put the lights from christmas lights through the middle and strung the lights around the banister of the deck.
I had a tree in the backyard that where I hung paper lanterns in bright colors.
I bought a box of leis and greeted everyone with one when they came.
I found some hawaiian music that we played during dinner time (afterwards we switched to regular music).
We also had a hula contest and a limbo contest. I have to say the crowd was hesitant to jump in on this at first, but once it started it was the best part of the night. I bought a coconut bra and grass skirt for the hula contestants to wear.
I originally wanted to have a professional hula dance or fire dancer come in, but it was too much money. If your budget allows, then that would be a fun touch.
I had the food catered, but we had the pig roast in addition to teriyaki chicken and beef, some sort of rice, salad, rolls. I wanted to go a little bit more authentic, but I had a lot of picky eaters coming so I tried to go as simple as possible.
For dessert I made an awesome dessert that is so easy: pineapple pie. If you want the recipe let me know. I also served fruit salad with tropical fruits, brownies and key lime pie (although I've seen some great recipes for passion fruit cake).
I hope this helps!
Well here you go! All these details sound fantastic!
Using fruit as centerpieces sounds like a pretty presentation that can double as food.
