1st time to LA - need help!

I have never been to Los Angles and due to some great airfares offered right now, my husband and I are booking a 4 night trip in February.

I want to do all the touristy things - see the Hollywood Homes, walk of stars, go to Roberston Blvd, would love to get a tour of a production set etc.

To do these activities where is a good location to stay? In LA? Outside of LA? We plan to rent a car. We can't stay at a high end hotel so I need a location before I need actual hotel recommendations!

Also, do you know what sites I can go to online to try to get tickets to see something filmed live - like a sitcom or Ellen etc.

Thanks, sorry for being such a tourist!

  • Hi there. I'd suggest you look at hotels located in Hollywood, Universal City or Burbank. I hear the Roosevelt in Hollywood is fantastic. LA is about a 20 minute drive from Hollywood without traffic. With traffic it can be a 40 minute drive which is why I suggest you stay in or near Hollywood.

Check out http://www.1iota.com/ for show tickets to Jimmy Kimmel and Carson Daly plus other live events. For Ellen and other shows you can usually go to the shows direct website, or the TV networks site and be linked to the ticket page. Good luck!

  • That's great advice from starsailor.  The only thing I would point out is that the Roosevelt is right in the middle of everything (you are literally on Hollywood Blvd, across from the Kodak practically) and recently refurbished so it's not a budget hotel by any means.  There are cheaper options if you look around.  I know there's an Econo Lodge at Vista and Sunset (because I used to live on Vista) and it's actually pretty nice looking. They've upgraded it recently.  I believe it's hotels.com that gives you all of the availabilites on a map, so you can choose where you want to be.  When my parents used to visit, they always stayed at a Best Western on the Sunset Strip (if you're interested in the Strip).  The nicest Best Western I've ever seen and not too pricey.

You will probably need a car to do most of the things you want to do.  Cabs aren't exactly easy to catch unless your hotel has a stand out front and few do.  You will be fine walking around Hollywood if you stay at a place like the Roosevelt (or even the Econo Lodge, I used to walk up to Hollywood and Highland from where I lived all the time) so you can see the walk of fame and some touristy stuff (Kodak theater, Chinese Theater, El Capitan, Madame Tussaud's) but to go to the studios, down Robertson or between Hollywood and Highland and the Sunset Strip you will need transportation.

Tour buses that will take you on tours of stars' homes are easy to find in Hollywood or, if you've rented a car, buy a map and drive around yourself.  I've never done it, but it could be fun.  I know I see the buses all around the city--even in Beverly Hills when I'm there--so I know they really get around.

    Have fun!
