A clusterfvck (long)

To catch you all up:

Grandpa S is now in a nursing home having been dx with gleoblastoma, the kind of brain nacer that Ted Kennedy had.  We thought he was having a stroke (at his brother's funeral, no less) last month & they did a CAT scan & found a tumor.  He has lost his ability to speak English among other things.  They are giving him 6 months at best.

Grandma S has always been batschitcrazy (she's the one who locked herself in the bathroom crying a few Thanksgivings ago because she ran out of gravy) & was adamant about not moving into assisted living or at least an apartment.  She uses a cane & is 81; she lives in a split level ranch house so there is nothing but stairs.  Cane + stairs = epic fail.  She breaks her wrist New Year's Eve & they give her morphine for the pain @ the hospital.  She ends up having a severe allergic reaction to the morphine & is put on a ventilator in ICU.  She is now breathing on her own but still not completely with it.; she also now has congestive heart failure.  They moved her to the same nursing home as grandpa but they are in separate wings as they cannot stand each other but have been married for 57 years.

My parents are leaving next weekend for 10 days in the Domincan Republic; they booked this vacation well before this whole thing started.  My dad has 2 brothers: 1 is an idiot, the other travels all the time for work.  Of course the brother who travels all the time for work will be in California for 3 days & then Michigan for 3 days as well when my parents are gone.  Guess who gets the call if one (or both) seizes up between 1/10 & 1/21?  Me.  My father is leaving me with "the folder" of their last wishes, arrangements, etc. in caseI need them.  I've been instructed to "put them on ice until we get back".

Christ on a cracker.

  • Yikes. Here's hoping for an uneventful 11 days.
  • On ice, huh?  Like a shrimp cocktail?

That sucks on all fronts.  I'm sorry that you have to witness your grandparents downhill fall.

  • Sounds like my grandparents. Only they still live together. Hate each other but have been married for  65 years.
  • I'm so sorry all of that is happening.  Good luck.
  • I'm sorry, that is a lot to take on.
