MIL's aunt and uncle are total sweethearts (to eachother and everyone else). Auntie B is what all beebees strive to be: totally doted on by her husband her entire life, madly in love with him the entire time, too. She's the kind of person who will give you a giant hug the first time she meets you, and then won't let go for a good 10 seconds.
Uncle B is your typical kindhearted old man. He's quiet, reserved, but always has a twinkle in his eye that's reserved for his wife. He ADORES her. They're so much fun to be around.
Auntie B has memory problems. Always has. It's finally been diagnosed as Alzheimer's. She repeats herself constantly and it's heartbreaking to watch. But Uncle B is always there to guide her.
However, he was just diagnosed out of the blue as having Alzheimer's as well, and he's quickly deteriorating.
In the last six months:
- They took their perfectly good small SUV to the dealership to get an oil change, and some scum-of-the-earth salesman talked them into buying a brand new car. Their old car was less than three years old.
- They went for a drive in the country to look at wildflowers and got lost. Uncle B ended up out of the car, on his knees in a ditch after seeing a particularly interesting flower. But he couldn't get up. A man drove up, saw what looked like some people in need of help, and CARRIED Uncle B back to his car. And the whole time, Auntie B had no clue what was happening. She thought she was just sitting in a car in the middle of nowhere, enjoying the scenery. That man just drove off - we still don't know who he was.
- Last week, they went to the doctor. Parked the car, and got LOST between the parking lot and the front door. (The parking lot is AT the front door.) A doctor ended up calling MIL and letting her know that some people had to help them inside.
It's just so sad. These are the stories that we *know* about. Who knows what happens on a daily basis. MIL checks on them once/week, but they have two daughters who've simply checked out. I hate to think of what it will take for them to come to their senses.
I really hope my body goes before my mind. I can't imagine not remembering how to tie my shoe or who my husband is.
Re: An old people story
That's awful. I really hope I don't live long enough to suffer that way.
It's completely sweet that they love each other like that, though. It gives me hope.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929
So sweet but heartbreaking.
That's really sad and scary. Someone needs to intervene before they get hurt.
I think the mind going before the body is harder on everyone around you. Losing your body before your mind is harder on you.
This makes me sad. My Great Uncle and Aunt were like this. Now he doesn't have much time left.
Their granddaughter's bat mitzvah was the same day as their 50th anniversary. He couldn't make it. He also missed my wedding. He was my first fan when I was 3 and singing into my great grandmother's cane.
Dammit. Now I'm crying for my family and Stinky's.
