Between fondue courses

I'm in the early stages of planning a fondue dinner party.  I want one course to have oil in the pot to cook shrimp (all the guests eat shrimp) and provide a bunch of dipping sauces.  Then the following course would be cheese with bread, veggies, etc.  Should I plan something like soup or salad for between courses when I'm dumping the oil and prepping the cheese?  Or just let everyone refresh their drinks and chat?

I'll have the second course ingredients as ready as I can but cheese can take awhile to melt.

Re: Between fondue courses

  • can you have the cheese already prepped and melted in a cast iron pot on the stove and just transfer it to the fondue pot?
  • You could do a salad between but I would advise having the cheese already melted in something else. That will take a long time.
  • My preference is cheese, salad, protein, dessert.
  • Cheese should come first, then the salad (if you decide to), then the oil w/meat or fish (and veggies can be cooked here too), then dessert. And serve white wine. It will help the cheese digest better.
  • Hmm, I was thinking shrimp first as a kind of appetizer then cheese with veggies, bread and already cooked meats as the main but adding more meats to be cooked in the pot and switching the courses isn't a bad idea...

Well, either way, pre-preparing the second course is a great idea.  Thanks!

  • Just had to say, now I want to host a fondue party!! We have a fondue set & it sounds so fun! We have done it before but just us...you have me thinking that I need to do a party in the near future!! :)
  • We love having fondue night and we always start w/ cheese fondue served w/ bread, apples, and red grapes for dipping.  Then the oil fondue w/ chicken, beef, and shrimp for the main course and some various dipping sauces (lately we've also had some vegetables to go with the meat like bell peppers, onions, etc.).  If we have any room left, we do chocolate fondue for dessert with strawberries, bananas, marshmellos, etc.
  • I'm planning a girls night Fondue party for my girlfriends next month- we're doing cheese (with bread and fruit), salad, and chocolate...none of us care for the oil.

There is a great recipe on PB Chocolate fondue under the food tab...jsyk.

     Have fun though!

  • No wine broth fondue? I prefer that to the oil.
