Think I need help from the pros, can anyone help answer some Q's...

Hi Ladies,

I wasn't going to say anything so soon, but according to the 3 tests I took earler yesterday morning, I'm 4 weeks PG!  (EDD April 8).  I am still in shock!  Didn't really expect it (thought I was coming down with the flu) and was still half asleep when I took the test.  My first throught when I saw it was 'wow the vertical line usually isn't there'.  Until I realized that it was a plus sign!  Spent most of yesterday googling every symtom I have to try to find remindies, and I just have two questtions about two I couldn't find info about.  Both are the symtoms that made me think something was defintly wrong with me and to take a test.  Sorry, this is going to get long, I've only had two hours sleep and I know I'm going to ramble...

1. I haven't been able to gets a good night's sleep since Monday. We have been on vacation this week, and since Tuesday night I maybe have gotten about 8 hours of sleep total.  It takes me about two hours to fall asleep, and then I'm waking up after about 2 hours, and I just toss and turn the rest of the night, and can't get back to sleep.  Does anyone know if Tylenol PM is safe to take this early?  I am only about 4 weeks along.  (I know some meds you can't take in early pregnancy but can take later and vice versa) I usually sleep fine, and get at least 7 hours a night.  I can't go without much sleep much longer, it's starting to drive me crazy.  Plus I have to go back to work on Monday, I will not be able to function on just two hours of sleep.  I remember someone who was PG mentioning Tylenol PM a few months ago, just can't remember who and what was said..sorry.

2. I have been getting major hot/cold flashes.  (this is what has been waking me up 99% of the time).  I NEVER get hot.  It can be 100 degrees outside and I'm still not hot.  All week I have been crazy hot.  I asked DH to turn up the AC the other night, and he literally asked me if I was sick,  My skin gets very hot and feels like it's on fire.  My heart sometimes starts to race a bit too.  I get sweaty for about five minutes.  I usally get up, have someting to drink, and walk around for a bit, the hotness gradually goes away, and then I get freezing cold,  I am shivering as I type this, I just had a hot flash about 1/2 hour ago.  I took my temp during one hot flash just to make sure I didn't have a feaver and and my temp was normal.  Is this being crazy hot one second and then freezing cold the next normal, or do I need to call the doc about this?  If it is normal, are there any remidies?  I just hate the feeling of being so hot, it just doesn't seem normal!!

If you read this whole thing, bless you.  Well it's almost 5:30, so I'm going to try to get back to sleep...wish me luck...

Re: Think I need help from the pros, can anyone help answer some Q's...

  • omg first CONGRATULATIONS!

second, the hot to cold cold to hot could be your hormones. they tend to go whacky when pg....

i would call the hospital and ask to talk to a nurse in labor and delivery. they should be able to answer your ?s

or if you keep getting hot and cold then maybe i would go get checked in the outpatient....

i hope you got back to sleep!

  • Congrats! It was a year ago this week that I found out I was pg. April is a great month to have a baby :)

Here is what my ob's website says on medication. I never took anything in the first 14 weeks as I was paranoid after having a m/c, but there are times when it make sense. Can you call your OB?

In general, it is recommended that pregnant women avoid medications, especially during the first 14 weeks. However, the following medications are acceptable for use during pregnancy: For a cold, you may take Sudafed, Chlor-Trimeton, Benadryl, Regular Strength Robitussin, Saline Nose Drops, and cough drops WITHOUT zinc. For a headache, you may take Regular Strength Tylenol, but do NOT take aspirin or Advil.

The hot/cold thing is normal. When pg your body temperature is higher than normal, and it takes a bit to adjust. I only had it bad like that the first month with the sweats and chills.

  • Congratulations!!! :)

Well, I would do what Kim said, call your Dr. or something about the tylenol PM....I'm sorry you haven't been sleeping well....my guess is the hot flashes are keeping you up, or is feeling sick? or just the anxiety about being PG? Maybe try a nice cool bath before bed to relax you and cool you down...

As for the hot flashes, my guess is that they are your hormones, they should level out after a while. Where I didn't have hot flashes while being PG, I did have them when I came home from having Austin - I soaked through so many PJs it was crazy, but it eventually stopped when my hormones leveled out...

  • Wahoo!  Congratulations!!!   :)

Both the sleeping and the hot/cold are probably just hormones.  In those first weeks especially, your body is all wacked out and you have major hormonal fluctuations.  I wouldn't take Tylenol PM until you talk to your OB.  Regular Tylenol is safe but my OB doesn't want me taking the PM version.  She always tells me if I have trouble sleeping to take Benadryl.  But I would definitely check with them before you take anything other than plain, regular strength Tylenol.  Just in case.

Best of luck, and H&H 9 to you!!!!

  • Oh how exciting!!!!  Congratulations!!!

I can't speak to the hot flashes as I didn't experience those myself.  But, my sleeping issues began almost immediately.  I had the hardest time staying asleep.  By 8 weeks or so I was BONE TIRED and would fall asleep easy but would have several wake ups.  It sucked, basically.

As for the TPM, def talk to your OB before administering that to yourself.  It's a good idea to try and avoid any meds during your first tri.  I was an Ibuprofen fiend pre-pregnancy (I always had headaches) and had to deal w/ ONE x-strength Tylenol.  In 3rd tri, I broke down and took TPM several times but honestly, it did little to help.  I just had horrible insomnia.  Benadryl helped more but not that much more ... so I just tried to deal.  I hope you don't have the same issues ... I cringe just thinking about how hard it was for me to sleep, ugh!!

    CONGRATULATIONS again - soooo exciting!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I have no advice, since I am not a mom and not pg, but I just wanted to say CONGRATS! Such happy news!!!! :)?
  • Nyssa - CONGRATULATIONS!!

From what I understand, stay away from the Tylenol PM unless your doc says it's ok.  If you want to talk to someone this weekend, try Ask-A-Nurse at 626-2626.  This is one of those "grin and bear it" times and my notes from my IUI said that any time from conception through the 1st trimester, it is best to avoid medication if at all possible.

I'll bet that the hot/cold thing is not helping you get sleep either!  It's totally hormonal - when I had my HcG shot for my IUI, I had the same thing happen while it was in my system.  Keep water by the bed - staying hydrated should help you level out the temps.

Best of luck to you!!!  H&H 9 months!

  • Congratulations!!!! Such an exciting time!!! :)  I'm not sure about the Tylenol PM, but the hot flashes are totally normal.  I would constantly say to friends, "Is it hot in here?" during my first trimester!  The joys of pregnancy!
  • Congrats!!! I say ditto to all the PP's....I also agree that April is a great month to have a baby....I found out Aug 6 that I was PG....I would sleep in front of a fan (I did....even during the winter) b/c I was sooooo hot all the time.  GOOD LUCK!!!

  • Congrats! I also got the hot/cold flashes with both boys early on. It went away soon though.

Ditto what everyone else aid about asking what your doc says but Tylenol PM is exactly tylenol plus benadryl. Both areafe alone so together they are too. My office says ant tylenol product of okay.

  • Congratulations!!!!  This is so exciting!!

  • I don't have any advice for you, but I just wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS!

  • Wow Congrats!!! I too was finding out I was PG around this time!  Awww memories!

As for the hot flashes, ditto what everyone else says, it's hormonal.  I got worse actually and then in the end we put on a plastic matress cover in case my water broke in bed and man it was BRUTAL LOL!

Don't quote me on this but I think you can get some heart palpitations due to the increased blood production that happens to support the baby, but definately check with your doctor!

    Best of Luck!
