Overseas Digi Cam?

Hi ladies,

DH has been out of the Corps a little over a year, but my brother-in-law is in Afghanistan right now. He's asking for a digital camera...any suggestions? I used to work in a camera shop, so I know a bit about them. I'm looking for something powered by AAs (no access to outlets), strong enough to stand up to the conditions, but not too heavy. I checked out the new Casio Exilim EX-G1, which would be perfect, but it's powered by a lithium ion batt. Anything shockproof, waterproof, freezeproof, or dustproof would be great. I don't mind dropping some cash on this to get something good, even though I know it probably won't come back in one piece (especially given what I know of my brother-in-law!). I'm going to check consumer reports too, but I hope some of you have recommendations. Thanks for any ideas.

Re: Overseas Digi Cam?

  • Have you considered something like the Zap Portable Energy device?  I haven't used it, I just googled it, but I know that there are other, similar devices out there.

If he only has access to AA batteries and not electrical outlets, why not use the AA batteries to recharge the Li-Ion battery in the camera?  It gives you more options for cameras, and brings the Casio Exilim EX-G1 back into play.
