Fabric Softener

I quit using fabric softener dyer sheets awhile ago, and haven't notice a difference with my clothes until now that it is winter.  Some of my daughters fleece jammies are staticy and have my hair clung to them.  Does anyone know of any homemade or green alternative that I could use just to stop the static?

Re: Fabric Softener

  • I put white vinegar in the fabric softener compartment in the washer....also I have wool dryer balls in the dryer along with 2 foil balls. One thing that I can say that helps me a TON is to time my drying...if you set your dryer just on a setting instead of timed drying, usually you will over-dry. I like to dry on low heat for 30-40 minutes...then check the clothes, if they are just about dry, then i put on air fluff/no heat for 10-15 minutes and then take them out. If my clothes go on ANY heat longer than the time it takes to get them dry...even 5 minutes, they end up super staticky! hope that helps!

  • i use vinegar only but still get static with DS's pj's.  it doesn't bother me or him enough to add more stuff.
  • We've been making our own "dryer sheets" in the winter.  I pour some Seventh Generation fabric softener into a bowl with a lid and cut up a couple small rags from t-shirts.  I keep the rags soaking in the softener, squeeze one out when I need it and throw it in the dryer like a regular dryer sheet.  That's the only thing that has worked so far.

I've tried vinegar in the rinse cycle, foil balls and those rubber (or whatever material it is) dryer balls and nothing works.  I haven't tried the wool balls though.  It seems to be worse on the really cold days when it's dry in the house.

  • I hang dry all fleece fabrics  to avoid static issues.  I find that it doesn't absorb much water, so it dries quickly anyway.  I also use vinegar in my washing machine.
