iTunes on new computer- Help!

Hey ladies! I just found this board existed, so I am hoping to see if any of you know how to do this (crossing fingers).

DH and I had an old, old computer that had our original iTunes account loaded into it as well as our iTunes library. Eventually our old slug got too slow, so we figured out how to move our iTunes library to an external hard drive. For the last 1.5 years we have had iTunes pulling our library from our external hard drive and this has worked relatively well for us. For Christmas we got a new lap top  and our intent is to donate the old slug and use the laptop to access our iTunes library on the external hard drive.

I have authorized the iTunes account on the new computer, and have it connected with the external hard drive. The problem is that my new authorized computer isn't recognizing our library on the external hard drive.  I tried connecting my iPod to the new computer and I got an error message that says, "The iPod cannot be synched, the required folder cannot be found."

I am about to go nuts over this. Any tips or tricks to make this happen easier?

Many thanks!

Re: iTunes on new computer- Help!

  • Have you checked your preferences for iTunes?  Under the Advanced settings, check to see where the computer is looking for your iTunes Media folder location.  I'm pretty sure if you change it to your external hard drive where you have your library set that should fix the problem.
  • Hmm... I checked and in my Advanced Settings I do not have an option to see my library. I have looked in File>Library> and the following items are in here: Back up to Disc, Organize Library, Export Library, Import Playlist, Export Playlist...

But nowhere does it say where it is pulling from...

    hmmm...

  • Go to iTunes>Preferences (or command comma to get the window to open) once that window opens, click on Advanced and you should see where iTunes is looking for the iTunes Media folder location.
  • Okay, I tried the following:

    edit>preferences>Advanced>iTunes media folder location

and selected the file in our external hard drive that has our iTunes. However it's still not pulling from it... I tried restarting our computer, etc. and to no avail... It can't possibly be this hard, and I know I am not the only person in the world to do this... Uuuuuuuuuuuuugh
