Anyone been to OBX?

I'm starting to work on planning a couple's trip to the Outer Banks this summer  with my college roomies and their SOs.  DH went to Corolla a few years ago with his family and said it was nice but they didnt really go out.  I need a place that has bars/restaurants within walking distance and isnt crazy expensive.  Any suggestions for an area I should look into?

Re: Anyone been to OBX?

  • Re-post this on the NC board and I'm sure you'll get some great suggestions. I wish I had more info for you but I haven't been out there in a while. I adore Ocracoke but it's definitely one of the quieter islands.

  • I went two summers in HS but don't really remember much. One year we stayed in Kill Devil Hills and we stayed right across the street from the ocean and while I wasn't old enough to look for bars, I don't really remember seeing much around that area. The other year we stayed farther south and it was a gated neighborhood with nothing around at all. I know that this isn't really much help other than to tell you what not to look at.

  • I've been but my grandparents planned everything so I can't tell you too much.  The only thing is that they had major devastation in OBX this fall due to a big storm that passed through.  Streets of houses have been condemned and the beach is not what it used to be.  Do some major research before you book your trip.  My grandparents went around Christmas and took tons of pictures...it is very sad.  Definitely post on the NC board to find out more.  GL!

  • Thanks for the heads up... I hadnt heard this.  I'll post on NC and look around.  We may go somewhere else if its bad.
  • Not sure which beach the PP is referencing but OBX is much larger than just one beach or island. There are plenty of places in good shape.

  • We're actually renting a house in Emerald Isle for a week in August with a bunch of DH's friends and their wives/kids.  I can't remember if Emerald Isle is technically in OBX or not.  One of DH's friends found the house and planned everything, but I've researched it online and it looks like a great place!  We didn't want a super lively bar scene, because a few of his friends have kids...but we were looking for more of a place with good houses, good beaches, and a few things to do around the area.

We are going on our trip in August too!  I've never heard of Emerald Isle.  I dont want a place that's all clubs/bars either... just something to do a couple of nights.  2 years ago we went to the Florida panhandle and were in between PCB and Destin and we had to go about 20 minutes to get to the next "village" which had a couple restaurants.  If we would have stayed in that village, it would have been great, although the houses/pools were better where we were.  I'm going to look into Emerald Isle.  My other idea is Tybee Island off the coast of Savannah, but that's mostly my way of getting to go to Savannah which I've wanted to do for years.

  • EI is a good choice! We've mostly stayed on the other end (Atlantic Beach near Ft. Macon) but you can drive down the whole island in about 30-45 min.

  • Good to know KB!  We're going the first week of August.  I've heard they have sea turtle hatchings in late August/Sept.  I am really hoping we may be able to see one of those while we're there too...although we prob will be too early.
