Name change process

I thought I saved it on my computer but apprently not.....so what's the process of changing my name on everything?  How many offical copies do I need of the marriage liscense and were should I start

Re: Name change process

  • I went to social security first.  I brought my marriage certificate and the other items they asked for.  When I changed my name, I thought you had to do SS first and then dmv, but that's not the case.  I guess you need the same for dmv, but i'm not sure.
  • Did you need just a copy or a certified copy of the liscense?  and were is the social security office...I live in Pitman,NJ
  • I believe a certified copy, but I don't think the lady where I went really checked.  I'm not sure where there is an office near you, but the SS website should have that information.  Apparently you need to go to the office near where you live.  I thought you could go to any one.
  • I did SS first, then DMV then my bank, credit cards and little stuff.  I am pretty sure I needed the certified copy for SS, DMV and bank.
  • Thanks!  It says there is a SS office up the street from my house so that's good
  • small world~my dh and I live in glassboro, but our next door neighbor is considered Pitman!! We got married at Our Lady Queen of Peace right off of Highland Terrace :) The social security office is right on Delsea Drive, behind the Friendly's. I ended up getting like 4 copies of our marriage liscense~just in case we ever needed them. I figured I was there, why not. Who knows what or where we'll be in years to come, and how hard it might be for us to get another "official" one in case one gets ruined or lost. So I got a few.
  • I got 3 copies but 2 would've been plenty and I could've just got one if I was patient. For certain things you have to mail in an official copy and you'll get it back but it might take a while. But most things you do in person they look at it and hand it back to you.

If my memory serves me correctly, you teach or work in schools, right? If your job requires a certificate, you have to change your name on that too. I didn't think of it at first and I was annoyed at how much they charged but since I was applying for a new job, I had to.

I'm pretty sure it's pronounced your mom's a moron and if you didn't have your name legally changed by the age of 22, so are you. Unless you're from another continent. -Groomz
  • I went to SS first, then DMV and then I went and changed everything else.  Make sure you change your registration too at the DMV.  I forgot to do that (and still haven't) and my car insurance needs a copy of that to change the name over.

    After that I did:

    -Bank

    -Home Owners Insurance

-Bills (some of which still didn't change over)

    -Mortgage

    -Credit cards

I didn't change over my name on the deed, because that costs money.  Your maiden name is still in your SS chain, so it really doesn't matter.

Don't forget to tell your work!  It can really affect your witholdings, etc.

  • Thanks for the info....Does my work need anything to change my name and how about the mortgage? Do I just call and change my name or do they need proof?

Oh and how about your passport?  I read up on how to do it but what is the charge?  I've had my passport for 5 yrs already so do I do it like a renewal?

    TIA

  • I think every work place is different. My work needed my new license, I think.

The passport website has info on changing your passport - it's like a renewal, but there's a form for name change. I think it cost me $70? I don't remember.

I didn't change my name on my mortgage until we refinanced. Like Izzy said - it costs money and it doesn't matter if you leave your maiden name on.

  • I did the DMV (needed my certificate and my old license) and then the SS office. The Glassboro office is so hit or miss, but definitely do it in person. I tried to do it by mail and everything was in limbo for 2 weeks until I went to track it down.

I didn't change my name on my passport until I needed a full renewal, but all the instructions are on the govt web site.

  • Your work payroll office will most likely need a copy of your marriage certificate.

I called my mortgage company and they told me what I needed to send in.  I needed a copy of my marriage license, a copy of my home owner's insurance with my new name, and I needed to fill out one of their forms.

I think I have some name change stuff on here: http://izzy523.googlepages.com/

I can't see it at work, and I can't remember.  I think there's a 'Name Change' page though and it might have passport stuff.
