We're planning our trip to Amsterdam!!  Big Smile  And I was wondering if you could give me any pointers, suggestions, etc.

We are going towards the end of November and do plan to take a 2-3 day trip to Paris while we are over there.

TIA!!

  • Oh how fun! What do you want to know? Did you book a hotel yet? How long will you be in Amsterdam? November is not the ideal time but there is still a ton to do. The highlights if you've never been:

    - van Gogh museum

    - Anne Frank house

    - canal tour

     - If you have extra time you can take the train to Haarlem and visit the Frans Hals museum or to The Hague . Or you can see a lot of windmills at the Zaanse Schans.

For food, there are a few things you have to try. Definitely try Dutch pancakes for lunch or dinner. They have special pannekoeken restaurants and they serve big thin pancakes with either sweet or savory toppings. Of course if you go to Paris you have to have the crepes there as well, esp. filled with "creme de marron" (chestnut paste). Also in the Netherlands we have a lot of Indonesian restaurants, and they have what they call a "rijsttafel" which is a collection of dishes with rice.

I can go on and on about things to see and do ;). I'll have to think some more and will come up with more tips for you.

  • Thank you so much Esther!!

We are going for an event in November.  Hopefully, though, if it's not the ideal time to be there the hotel rates will be lower.  :)

  • We were there one time in January. It was so cold! But we had a wonderful time! Here are photos:

How many days will you be there? I forgot to mention, if you manage to go to Den Haag, there is also the town of Delft nearby where Johannes Vermeer used to live. He is my favorite painter of all time. They have a lot of his paintings in Den Haag at the Mauritshuis.

We haven't booked a hotel yet.  Can you give me any suggestions of good places, and places to stay away from?

  • What kind of accommodations are you looking for. The hotels we've stayed at so far have all been close to the Museumplein and the Vondelpark. It was walking distance to the van Gogh museum and with the extensive tram network it was really easy to get to downtown. You can buy a multi-day pass that you can use on all forms of public transit in Amsterdam.

I'm not exactly sure.  I know we want to be in the city within walking distance to stuff, but I'm not too picky.  Just as long as it's clean and fairly inexpensive.  The event is near Central Station and Melkweg, so something fairly close to there would be convenient.

  • I suggest you check out the website hotels.nl and booking.com for hotels and reviews. That's where I usually book ours, you can get some good deals that are possibly cheaper than Expedia. Also check out Tripadvisor for traveler reviews.

Also, de Melkweg is closer to the Museumplein and Vondelpark than it is to Central Station, so you might consider staying near the Museumplein / Leidseplein area (plein means square).

In the past we've stayed at the Park Plaza Vondelpark. We found a good deal for it online. I remember it had a huge bathroom with a glass wall between the bathroom and bedroom (with some matted glass). It was pretty neat!

We've also stayed at the Park hotel before. It's rated as a 4-star hotel but we got such a good deal on it, and the room seemed to be in a different wing than the main hotel, even though it shared the front door. The room was a bit small but for the price it was great. We just spent one night there though.
