bamboo- the running kind

We have an accepted offer on a house. One of the potential problems is the bamboo planted on our lot in the backyard and immediately next to the front porch. It's the running kind for sure (part of the beautiful stonework in the backyard has bamboo starting to shoot through). There's also a risk that there's bamboo growing on the neighbor's yard (liability on our end). We have yet to consult a bamboo expert/arborist. Any ideas/experience on how to uproot running bamboo?

TIA!

Re: bamboo- the running kind

  • If you buy this house, you'll be dealing with bamboo every single day you live there.  It is nearly impossible, unless you kill your entire yard (and probably not even then) to get rid of running bamboo.  It's insidious in its spread.

I wouldn't buy the house for this very reason--it's most likely an expensive, time-consuming problem that will never be fixed.

  • I have heard of someone who had to take 10 inches of top soil out...they came in with bulldozers and took out the whole "forest" of bamboo. They had to take out the 10 inches b/c the bamboo would grow back ASAP. I do remember reading an article in Mother Earth about using vinegar to treat/take out bamboo. You may want to Google it! Good luck as bamboo is a pain in the a@@ from what I hear!
  • We bought a house with running bamboo

It took 2 years for us to get rid of it

You can tell the previous owners tried to prevent it from running

We dug up bricks, cement block, pavers, and other things they threw in the ground to try to stop it

We dug it all up.  Then we put a barrier down along our fence under the ground.  Our neighbor has bamboo on their side of the fence which is why we have put down a barrier.

many people told us to pour gasoline on it.  I didnt want that in my yard!
