Wine selection help

DH & I are having a housewarming party next Saturday from 2:30 - 5 pm.  I was thinking of serving wine but don't have the slightest clue what the 'good' kinds are.  Can anyone give me suggestions for a few good red and white wines to serve (preferable under $15 per bottle).

Also - if I am serving wine, do I need enough wine glasses for everyone?  I have 8 glasses currently.  Should I go out and buy more just for this occasion?

TIA!

Re: Wine selection help

  • I would just ask the sales clerks for assistance.  Is there a Spec's in your area?

  • Are you also serving food?  If so, what are you planning on serving?

  • I would ask a clerk as well.  If it's cold where you are you can also do a mulled wine- it will go further.

I don't think you need to buy glasses.  Could you borrow some from a friend/relative?  If not I'd just get the short, clear plastic glasses and call it a day.

  • unless the people you are inviting over are big into wine, then i would just stick to a few crowd-friendly picks. for white- either a charonnay or pinot grigio. for reds- either a merlot or shiraz.
  • I'm planning on serving a selection of appetizers:

    • Veggies & dip
    • Fruit kabobs
    • Homemade salsa and guacamole
    • Buffalo chicken dip
    • Spinach artichoke dip
    • Small variety of desserts

I was trying to keep everything rather light since it is in the afternoon and right before dinnertime.

To previous poster:  We do not have a Spec's in this area.

  • I didn't even think about the short clear plastic cups!  For some reason all I could think of were the big red cups that you drank keg beer out of in college.  Ha-ha!  I think I'll pick up some the clear cups.  Thanks for the suggestion.
  • Check Anderson's or World Market.

  • Or ask someone at trader joe's.  I have some I really like from there.. but there more in the $5 price range. :)  Another place with good wine around the $10 mark is Costco.
  • Definitely check Trader Joe's or a Total Wine for specifics, but generally, good versatile whites are chardonnay and pinot grigio and versatile reds are pinot noir and merlot.  The chardonnay and merlot usually have a bit more body to them.

Trader Joe's is a great place for wine $15 and under, I have done wine tastings/classes with higher end wines, and haven't ever gone wrong with them

I would pick a pinot grigio for the white and a pinot noir for the red, both lighter

Regarding glasses, I would have as many wine glasses as you have guests, even though not everyone will drink one, some people may forget which glass is theirs or want a different glass if they move from white to red wine

  • For that sort of items I would probably go with the Kendall Jackson Chardonnay.  Its one of my favourites!  It can usually be found at most grocery stores.  About $12 and well worth it!  If you have a membership at Sams or some other site like that they sometimes have it for less.

If you want something more sweet rieslings are good, and so is the Sutter Home Moscato.  Thats probably the sweetest wine I have ever had.  It goes great with frozen eclairs from Kroger.

I hope that helps and have a good time!

  • Trader Joe's has a great selection of wines under $15. I served a bordeoux at a dinner party I had during the holidays and everyone enjoyed it. I also served a white wine from Trader Joe's called Black Cat. It comes in a pretty blue bottle and I think its a German wine. Wink

agreed- if you dont plan on having a lot of large parties, just get the small plastic cups and call it a day. Most wine shops can give you good wines at a specific price point, and they should offer you a discount for purchasing in bulk. Good luck!

  • I totally agree with the Trader Joe's reccommendations.  I just had a $6 prossecco from there last night, and it was surprisingly good.  Also, for something like this, don't be afraid of boxed wines.  We had these at a recent party Red Truck & Black Box Sauvignon Blanc , and both were great.

  • I agree with sporky - just pick a few different whites and reds. Your local wine shop should be able to help you pick out a nice varied selection that will please everyone.

People will probably disagree, but I like having real wine glasses - you can pick some up for pretty cheap at places like Pier One, World Market, or even Target. Then, you'll always have extras on hand (I am always breaking my wine glasses).
