elliptical machines

Does anyone own an elliptical machine? DH and I are thinking about cancelling our gym memberships that have gone virtually unused since the wedding and buying an elliptical machine for the house. However, we don't know much about brand names and quality.  Is it better to buy new or used?  Is Craigslist reliable?

 TIA!

Re: elliptical machines

  • I bought one (Reebok) from Sports Authority for the VERY same reason, because my contract was up at the gym. I found that I did not use it much in the 90 days that I had it, so I still had my receipt (per their return policy) and took it back for a FULL refund. I like a variety though and that 1 machine just was not cutting it, so I went back for the gym membership.

I bought a Wii off Craigslist and it was a perfect transaction... unopened with receipt. I think it is much like e-bay, just use caution with who you are dealing with and meet in a public place.

  • We have a Sole eliptical that we bought at Dicks for $999.  It was originally $1400 (I think).  Its a great eliptical, not that I use it like I should...

My suggestion is to do research before you buy.  If you're going to spend the $$, know what you're getting.  For instance, DH is 6'4" so he really needed the eliptical to have a 20" stride or else it was worthless for him.

  • We did the same exact thing. I was paying $50/mo at Bally's and my contract was up so I begged for an eliptical for Christmas and got the one I wanted -- about $400 from Sports Authority.

While a $1,400 one would be NICE to have...I went with what I knew I could get. I knew what functions I liked on the machines that I used at the club and which ones I could do without so I went with the basic one that gave me what I wanted. It has pre-programmed workouts, ability to do a "free-style" workout, the moving arms and a fan. AND it runs very quietly on one D battery. There are two stride settings and the ever necessary cup-holder.

Yes Craigslist is reliable but sometimes with exercise equipment you don't know what you're getting. Go store to store and make a spread-sheet...

I don't remember the brand name but it's not Precor or anything fancy. I LOVE my eliptical.
