Well, she might not be going to Hawaii now.

After a bunch of typical Navy drama, it looks my sis and her husband are headed for San Diego.  Oh well, no more Christmas in Hawaii for me.  I do hear San Diego is nice though, so now I'll get to visit her and decide if I ever want us to get stationed there.

  • San Diego is gorgeous!  My uncle is stationed there and I visited once and loved it.  If I was going to move to California that's where I'd go.

  • M loves it in San Diego, he got shipped to the navy yard over there to do work once for 3 months and he said if he ever had to pick a transfer place, if he couldn't get Pearl, that would be his second pick.
  • If anyone knows neighborhoods she should avoid when looking for housing, please let me know!

  • That sucks about Hawaii, but I know SD is supposed to be really nice!  Like you said, at least you'll have a nice place to visit!

  • I've always wanted to go to SD-so that would be great!  I hear Hawaii is $$$$-not that SD wouldn't be, but... either sound terrific with the cold weather we've been having!

  • I loooooooooooooove SD! ITs only a 5-6 hour drive away, so we try to get out there once a year.
  • I love San Diego too, and honestly I think that it is a nicer place to live than Oahu (isn't that where you said she would be stationed?).  There is so much to do in San Diego too.
  • I think Hawaii is fabulous to visit, but so is SD, and I think it would be a much nicer place to live! SD is the shiit! And you really can't go too far wrong as far as places to live. I think Aria might be more familiar with the specific neighborhoods down there (you have family there, yes?), so she might be able to give advice about that. SD is also probably cheaper to get to for you!
  • I grew up in North County SD and I PPH SD!  I can't wait to move back (in due time, in due time).  I have family in Oceanside and Vista and friends all over.

San Diego is SO fun.  It's WAY more laid back than LA or OC, way more surf-oriented.  Flip-flops are required.  It's a hop, skip and a jump to Mexico (not that you want to spend a lot of time in "TJ").  There's Sea World, Legoland, the best zoos (San Diego Zoo & Wild Animal Park), fun museums (yes, fun), great theater, great outdoor shopping.  And you're only an hour from Disneyland and 2 hours from LA.  The weather is pretty much 73 degrees year-round.

There are great areas and bad areas.  Really expensive to really cheap.  Because there is so much military in SD, you can get a military discount on everything, including restaurants, rent and car purchases.  It's also very conservative compared to a lot of California (which is not my bag, but whatevs).

Let me know which branch of the military and I can tell you which base and which areas to pinpoint.  I am most familiar with the cities surrounding Camp Pendleton (Marine Corps).

Let me know.  You can also ask Code!  You can also check out signonsandiengo.com.

  • I saw your more recent post, but I have to say I'm partial to San Diego! ; ) The base is HUGE and my bro loves it down there FWIW!
