1/11 How did you wind up in SC

I'm not sure if we've asked this before or not, but if we have, I don't remember the ansers!

So why did you make SC your home? Have you always lived here?  Did you move here to be near family? Away from family? For the weather, beach...for a job?

Re: 1/11 How did you wind up in SC

  • We moved here pretty randomly.  We were newlyweds and living in Washington, DC.  We knew we didn't want to live there forever.  I was laid off from my job at IBM and DH was getting tired of his job so we decided it was the best time to move!

We started applying all over the East Coast and I ended up having an interview for a job in Charlotte, but the interview was in Greenville at a staffing agency.

DH and I fell in love with it here, plus I have a cousin who lives in Simpsonville.

So, we made the decision to move here!  We had no jobs lined up, but we prepayed our rent for 6 months when I signed the lease for our apartment.  I wound up landing a job in the week between when we signed a lease here and when we actually moved, and then DH started doing temp work in Greenville shortly thereafter.

Now he has a permanent job he loves at the Greenville Hospital System, and we've bought a home.  I don't see us leaving SC anytime soon!

  • We made SC our home due to a job.  We actually just moved here this past Fall and love it thus far!  BF was in AL and had lost his job and I was in MI.  We knew we wanted to take the next step in our relationship and decided that no matter where he ended up, I would follow (he's an engineer, so it's harder for him to find a job, which is why we would go where he could get one).  Luckily, he interviewed with a great company down here this summer and was hired shortly after.  They relocated us both down here and we are slowly getting acclimated!
  • When I was 12 my dad was transferred here and I've been here ever since.

I've lived a lot of places, but SC is honestly my favorite.  I doubt I'll ever leave.

  • My sister moved down here from NY in 2004.  I was incredibly jealous of her big giant house she and BIL moved into down here.   DH and I got married in 2004 and the cost of houses on Long Island was pitiful.  Like over $300k for a fixer upper in a bad neighborhood.  Even my sister said she wouldn't buy her own house in NY.  Tiny house, on a main Road, Near a school, no garage, one floor- UGH!   DH and I knew if we stayed in NY we'd pay over $600K for a house and then never ever get to pay it off. We'd be working til we're 90.

At first DH didn't want to move- he would joke that I could talk with my sister via videophone and visit her.   So we visited her in 2005 and just "looked" at houses.  Just to see what was what.   We talked about it and became more serious (DH no more joking around) and looked at different areas, builders, schools, pricing.  In 2006 we made the final decision and had our house built.  We never saw our house til it was finished-but sister would send us updates.   The best thing about my house is no Mortgage!  We were able to pay cash for our house.   I doubt we will ever move.

  • Dh got a good job here. I wanted to get out of the NE anyway and be back south and this is just where we wound up.

Not sure if it's home but we are enjoying it for the time being!

  • Both of my parents are from NC, around Charlotte.  When they got married, they had the opportunity to move to different places for my dad's job, which they did, because they were young and wanted to travel.  They eventually went to Germany in 1982, and I was born there in 1985.  When I was a little less than a year old, they got the opportunity to move to Aiken, SC and they moved there to be closer to their families.

DH and I both went to Clemson and really loved the upstate, so we made it a goal to live in Greenville.  DH got a job here and that's how we ended up in this part of the state.

  • My DH took a transfer with his company. We were living in Jersey before we came here and we didn't love it love it so we figured why not. We still have our house in Jersey that we rent out but want to sell. We are both originally from Mass so that's where we would go if we don't stay here. Not sure if we will live here for the rest of our lives but we do enjoy it. We have family down in Hilton Head so it helps but they are still 2 hrs away.
  • I was actually born in Charleston  and lived @ Kiawah in the early 80's...way before Hugo-we left for TN in '85.
I'd been back to visit a few times growing up but that's it....FAST FORWARD about 12-14yrs... finally convinced DH, then just bf to spend MLK weekend in Charleston in '07. He LOVED IT. as it turned out, not long  after we got engaged he received a job offer from a company here in Greenville, so literally the day after we got married we moved down here and started house hunting.  We've been here ever since and love it.
The only other places i can see us going any time soon would be Charleston, RTP (Raleigh area of NC) or Nags Head/outer banks of NC.

  • I was born and raised in Chattanooga. Met DH while working a traveling job and stayed in Tennessee while we were dating. DH got a job in Atlanta in 2008 and moved there with him and then he got transferred to Greenville in January 2009. We are probably going to be here another 2 years and then move back to Chattanooga once the restaurant he works with opens their property there.

  • My junior year of college I had an internship in Greenwood, SC. Over the summer I really loved being there. DH and I never wanted to stay in our hometown bc that's what everyone does and we wanted to move on. I got a job offer at the end of my internship for a different division of the company near Spartanburg, so we came and visited to let DH get a feel for the area. We decided to take the plunge and moved right after I graduated.
  • I was born and raised in Spartanburg.  Now I'm an hour away.   Yes,  I love the Upstate and will be here for-ev-er.
  • Born and Raised here in the Capital City. Still Love it!!!!
