Preschools in the city

We are starting to look into preschools.  Any good recomendations?

Re: Preschools in the city

  • From what I hear, look at the high school where you'd like for your child to go.  Work backwards from there.  In Chicago, schools feed into other schools.  Picking the best preschool can lead to a great grammar school and then onto a top high school.

  • What curriculum are you considering?

    Montessori- Near North Montessori

    Other:

    British School of Chicago

    Lab of University of Chicago

    Latin

  • we are in the south/west loop so something in that area would be idea.  We are open to different learning environments but dont want to pay an arm and a leg.  Latin is close to $23K...not really something I feel comfortable paying.
  • Where do you live and what are you looking for?

Most of the CPS schools have preschool under the "Preschool for all" program. It may be only 2.5 hours a day, but it's free. some other CPS schools have tuition-based preschool--you can find more information on the CPS Web site.

FYI, Latin, Parker, Lab et al will set you back $15k or so a year.

  • Working with products of the schools, I have seen great products from the British School.  I don't know if they have Pre-K but Francis Xavier Ward is a great school in the loop as well as Ogden.

  • What is your neighborhood school?
  • skinner offers a tuition-based pre-k in the west loop. It is in a separate building from, but close to, skinner elementary. Skinner is a 10 rated school in cps. I have subbed there for both pre-k and k. Pre-k program seemed good, but problem w k is that the class was overcrowded. Hopefully that is something they have fixed/are fixing.
