Passport....

This is for those of you who have already updated your passport-

How did you do it? Did you mail it in with your marriage certificate and payment, etc.?

Or, did you go in to a local agency (non-expedited)? If this, did you schedule an appointment to go in, or did you walk-in? Also, if you do this, do they take your picture there, or do you still have to bring in the passport-sized photos?

I need my passport updated by the end of May (not expedited or anything). It's more than a year old, so I know I have to pay and everything. I just wanted to know which is the best way to go about this.

TIA!

Re: Passport....

  • Most post offices have a service there that has walk in hours.  Call ahead.  I encourage you pay extra to have it tracked.  Mine got lost in the mail and then made its way to me 3 months later.  Some post offices will take your picture but will charge you more than if you get it done at walgreens.

  • I am currently in the process of doing this.  I mailed it and did not pay to have it expedited, but I did pay to have it overnighted once ready.  I had my pictures taken at a passport place (you can do this at some drug stores too) and mailed my current passport with the marriage license, form, photos and a check.  They say they will mail back your license.   I did have it tracked and they seemed to have received it, plus they cashed my check.  If you live in Chicago you can go to the Federal Building office (230 S. Dearborn St.) and have it issued that day without having to mail it or have it mailed to you, only downside is that it eats up your day and it costs more.  You will need to get new photos no matter what route you take.
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • I mailed mine in with the form (and no payment because it was less than a year old) along with the original marriage certificate.  I had the certificate and passport both back within 3 weeks.

Edit: I had my marriage certificate, new passport, and old passport all back within 3 weeks.  So, everything.
