EK and Stevia

So H and I went to Costco yesterday. As usual they had demos various foods. They had a woman that was giving samples of Stevia on a strawberry. Yes, it tasted good and similar texture to sugar. I asked the representative if you can bake/cook with it? She said absolutely not. It would ruin the flavor and it would come out tasting bad.

So now I'm imagining everything that EK makes tastes like schit. Oh and I saw that Kafir drink on sale at Costco for $10. A whole case of it.

Re: EK and Stevia

  • I still don't understand the obsession.  Did God say that sugar was evil or something?
  • She is so strange!

  • IIRC, she thinks sugar is too processed. Which - okay, I can see that with white sugar, but she can buy turbinado sugar at Wal-Mart, and that's essentially "raw" sugar, closer to the cane. It still bakes like sugar, though it's more difficult to dissolve in liquids, and it's probably healthier than white sugar or Stevia.

  • So, assuming you're not EK, what do you do with Stevia if you can't cook with it? Is it just supposed to be sprinkled on strawberries and in coffee?
  • I got Stevia from my SS, and H uses it in his coffee (he has teeth problems, so he stays away from real sugar in drinks.). He says it's fine, it's no different than Equal or Splenda, taste-wise.

  • I use it in my coffee and I love it. (Truvia is the only brand I've tried). It tastes less artificial than Splenda, which was my old favorite.
