They Say: Eat Bacon For Baby?s Sake

bacon and eggs 300x225 They Say: Eat Bacon For Babys SakeAs if Americans needed another excuse to eat bacon . . . here?s another one! Researchers at the University of North Carolina say eating bacon and eggs when you?re pregnant will help with fetal brain development.

The study in mice was published in the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology Journal January issue.

It relates back to other studies done (and published in FASEB) linking choline - one of the ingredients of a greasy breakfast - to brain development. According to the scientists, adding choline will specifically affect the portion of the brain which affects memory.

?We may never be able to call bacon a health food with a straight face, but the emerging field of epigenetics is already making us rethink those things that we consider healthful and unhealthful,? Gerald Weissmann, MD, editor-in-chief of the FASEB Journal told Science Daily. ?This is yet another example showing that good prenatal nutrition is vitally important throughout a child?s entire lifetime.?

If that isn?t enough of a reason to pull out the frying pan, maybe this is: choline consumption has been linked to a reduction in your breast cancer risk.

  • ~copy and pasting~

I need to keep this handy for when I get KU.

"H, make me some bacon and eggs, please."

"TT, really? You SURE you want that for breakfast?"

"H, do you want our kid to be smart or dumb? GIVE ME BACON!"

  • Awesome! I ate more eggs and pork products while I was pregnant than I have in my entire life. (I may be exagerating slightly, but I did eat a lot.)
  • it would be helpful if I could EAT bacon and/or eggs. :-P

(I did choke down a hard-boiled egg w/ lunch, just as a source of protein.  But I didn't like it.  boo)

  • The smell of bacon or meat cooking is way too strong for me right now. It's torture having an office above a restaurant that uses bacon or ham in some of it's entrees. I really wish it would burn down.

  • Aw, you guys will feel better soon. Though I know, it will never feel soon enough.

I had bacon cheeseburgers, once I was over the ms. I never could have eggs, though they were a protein staple for me before and after pregnancy. Eggs and cranberry juice were just intolerable the whole 38 weeks.
