going away to bootcamp...gift ideas?
So DH's cousin is headed out for boot camp and we're having a big family BBQ this Saturday to send him off...
DH and I were talking about how proud of him we are and how we'd really like to give him something. We gave him $ for his recent graduation, but we'd like to give him something different for this...we were thinking like some sort of "care package" but I dunno....are they strict about what you can bring with you?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Re: going away to bootcamp...gift ideas?
I don't know how strict they are with what people can bring.
But how about getting him postcards and stamps so he can write home? Phone cards so he can call home. If he has and/or is allowed to bring an I-Pod maybe an giftcard to download songs. A nice frame that he can put a picture of his family in. Some sort of travel organizer so he can keep his stuff neat? I don't know..these were just the first things that popped into my head. Good Luck!
Wow! That is great about your DH's cousin. I am so happy to hear when people are going into the military. They are a better person then I am, that is for sure.
Ok, this is coming from my husband, who went into the Marines in 1994. He said you are aloud to bring anything religious in with you, and then stuff for writing home. He said anything else you bring in (clothes, razors, toothpaste, wallets, money, etc) will be confinscated from you and stored or you have to throw it away. He said that you can send in a package after they are there (toiletries, magazines, socks and teeshirts, foot powder, etc). But pretty much, that it would be pointless to give him things to bring in because they will take it.
He did say that if you send candy or food, they make you eat it right there, or share it with the whole group or throw it out. He said some of the Drill Instructors wont let you have it at all. They dont have to let you have any sort of sent in food so that could be risky.
If you want to make him a package to give to him, and then tell him you'll send it once he is all set, that would probably be the better idea. If you need more ideas of what to bring, let me know.
Also, my husband said that this was for the Marines, and it was 14 years ago, so things may have changed, but as far as he knows, that is a pretty standard rule!
