Non-lame baby shower games/activities?
My sister & I are hosting a baby shower in February. Any ideas on games or activities that are fun but low-key? The group that will be there aren't exactly the "dirty diaper" or "guess the baby food" types.
Re: Non-lame baby shower games/activities?
I played one where guests have to write down as many song titles they can think of that have the word "baby" in them.
The Timer Game; While the guest of honor is opening her gifts you set a timer for about every 7-10 minutes. When the timer goes off, who's ever gift she is opening or reaching for gets a prize.
I give a prize for the most creatively wrapped gift. I give the prize at the end of opening all the gifts...I usually decide the winner as the host based on the ohhhh's and ahhhh's.
Guessing games are always simple and fun: Fill a baby bottle with jelly belly's or any candy that you can color coordinate to the shower colors. Have the ladies write their name and how many on a slip of paper. They win the bottle of jelly belly's and an additional prize.
each person cuts yarn as to their guess of how big the mommy-to-be's tummy is & the one closest to it, wins.
baby bingo : where guests write down what they think she will receive & cross off when she opens it.
A low-key thing I always do when I host showers is:
-have guests write baby advice on 4x6 cards for the mom to be and collect them in a basket. (these could be filled out through out the shower)
-at some point have the mom-to-be pull a few cards out of the basket (she can or can't read them aloud)
-the card(s) pulled out are raffle winner(s)
-at the end of the shower, I insert all the cards into a inexpensive 4x6 photo album. with the leftover slots, the mom can insert photos of the shower.
HTH!
I think all baby shower games are lame (just my opinion)
When I plan to host a shower in May, I am creating a video slideshow of the husband and wife when they were babies to show in the background.
I also plan to have each guest write down some baby advice on a notecard and as their gift is opened the hostess or assistant will read their notecard. Then after the babyshower I'll have them placed into a blank book (diary type book) by a calligrapher for the mom to keep.
I am completely anti game for any type of shower. At the one I hosted in July, everyone was perfectly content to social-there was no need for me to entertain them.
Some of these suggestions are cute, but I would speak to the mother-to-be about them first, esp if you are going to do the one with yarn. I've seen several guests of honor get really upset when they realized either a) how big they were or b) how big people thought they were. Some may find it funny, but I would not want to tempt pregnant hormones.
One of the games we have played at a few showers is the "LEFT - RIGHT" game. Even the guys liked it at one of our Jack & Jill baby showers. We wrapped inexpensive gifts (photo frames, bottled wine, desk accessories, note pads, votive candles, etc. A nice but inexpensive pen set was also wrapped. At one shower that was small in number we bought a gift for everyone. At a much larger shower, we bought anywhere from 5-10 gifts.
You hand out the gifts randomly and tell the guests they are not allowed to open just yet. As someone reads the story, everytime they say left or right or Wright they have to pass the gift in that direction. ( I have actually added a few extra lefts and rights to get the gifts moving more around the table).
Here is the story:
Left / Right Baby Shower Game
Mr. WRIGHT was to take Mrs. WRIGHT RIGHT to the hospital when she was in labor. As he LEFT in the car, he turned RIGHT out of the driveway, BUT he had to go RIGHT back home for he LEFT Mrs. WRIGHT at home. They both got in the car on the LEFT side, as the RIGHT side door would not open. Mr. and Mrs. WRIGHT again LEFT for the hospital, turning RIGHT out of the driveway. An argument occurred about the RIGHT turn, as Mrs. WRIGHT said that Mr. WRIGHT should have turned LEFT. Mr. WRIGHT kept insisting that he was RIGHT, but Mrs. WRIGHT kept insisting that the hospital entrance was on the LEFT. Two blocks away after another LEFT turn they discovered they had LEFT Mrs. WRIGHT?s over night bag at home. So, they made a LEFT turn, then a RIGHT to go back home to where they had LEFT the bag. As they turned RIGHT on to their street, Mrs. WRIGHT said ?Let's just go RIGHT to the hospital and send someone else RIGHT to the house for the fact that we LEFT the bag on the couch.? They went LEFT at the next block and turned RIGHT back around. Finally at the hospital Mr. WRIGHT pulled up to the front where he LEFT his wife to go RIGHT in. Inside the hospital they wheeled Mrs. WRIGHT away. ?Where is my wife? I only LEFT her for a minute,? exclaimed Mr. WRIGHT. A nurse rushed him RIGHT down the hall, they made a LEFT turn, then a RIGHT, and a LEFT turn again. Mr. WRIGHT, found Mrs. WRIGHT already in delivery. But, he then realized that he had LEFT the video camera in the car. RIGHT away he ran out of the room and back to the car. Not only had he LEFT the camera but he had LEFT the lights on too. Mr. WRIGHT wasted no time, he ran RIGHT back to his wife?s room. As Mr. WRIGHT walked in all he heard was screams from his wife, because he had LEFT her room and was nowhere in sight. I?m sure you can guess what happened next. As Mrs. WRIGHT had the baby Mr. WRIGHT passed out on the floor. But when he came to he got a shock once more. For there he saw Mrs. WRIGHT sit with the miracle of life. With two babies on her LEFT and one on the Right, Mrs. WRIGHT turned to her husband and said ?there is one thing LEFT to do, I think we should name these WRIGHT babies, how about you? Now you know how their whole evening went. They LEFT things at home, but still made it. Which way did the gift go? To the RIGHT and then to the LEFT, stop the passing and open your gift!
Enjoy!
Depending on your crowd here's a coupel more ideas:
For the pop culture fans: match or write in the parents name of the famous baby or vice versa
For the groups that has a lot of other moms: a purse game where you have a list of items tthat you call out & see who has the most of these items in their purse. You can pick random things that only a mom would have (safety pin, children's tylenol, a lolly pop).
