clematis climbing deck post?

Does anyone know if a clematis will ruin a wooden deck if that is what it is given to climb? I am thinking of planting some clematis to run up the posts of our deck, but am afraid that the plant might rot the wood. Any thoughts??

Re: clematis climbing deck post?

  • My dad has had a clemantis growning over a sturdy trellis for years with no problems.  I know they require a lot of support.
  • I don't think it will ruin it as quickly as other plants, but you wont' be able to treat the wood if it's got a pretty big plant attached to it. It will take over more than anything. I recommend that you give it something else to climb like a sturdy fence, trellis, etc. That way you can treat your deck wood and not worry about the wood under the plant rotting because it's gone untreated over time.
