Yay! My office building has been on a "greening" mission for a few years now. They gave out free CFL bulbs to tenants a couple years back, and have switched to low-flow plumbing fixtures, lowered the max. water temperature, and assorted other facilities updates. All tenants were already required to recycle, as that's a city law, but now they've started a building composting pick-up, too! Now our office has green compost bins in each kitchen in which we can put food-soiled paper goods and food scraps.
I just hope they're used properly. Most people around here are environmentally aware, but there are a few who don't like "greenies," and there's at least one person who consistently dumps his coffee into a recycling bin. (No one knows who, from what I've heard, but there are theories. We're an office of about 70 over two floors, so you never know.)
Anyway, yay for office composting!
Re: My office now has composting!!
Oh that's awesome!!
The biggest tenants in my building are a daycare and a food service marketing co. and I just cringe at all the waste. They are so-so on the recycling, but then there's a lot of compostable waste and it goes into landfills.
Did they do this through Waste Management (I'm not even sure that's your trash co in the city, but that's who we have and we have compostable yard waste)? I'd love for our building to have the compost bins too!
I wonder if big signs on the bins clearly stating what goes in would help. That's really weird to dump your coffee in the recycling, even the trash would be weird (I'm thinking the liquid itself?).
There are big signs on the bins, and even a hand-written one on the bin it most frequently happens to that says "NO COFFEE PLEASE!!!" Yes, we're talking about someone dropping his half-empty PAPER cup in it. That's the other thing; our kitchens are stocked with mugs, but we also have some paper cups on hand for guests. Most employees use mugs, but a couple of guys always use paper cups.
But I digress; most people around here are good.
The memo forwarded from our receptionist says it's Sea-Dru-Nar who handles our recycling, and Cedar Grove handling the compost. I also just noticed that now the building management office will accept batteries and CFL bulbs for recycling.
Love it.

You totally could...ours started small in one building and moved company wide (many many buildings!) We have a "green team" at work...you could have a "commitee" to help you!

Thanks for the encouragement! I need it. I am going to make this my mission for the year. Any advice anyone has on how I should get started is welcome. I think I will plan to bring this up at an upcoming staff meeting. Small steps!
That's awesome!
I read an online comment from a girl saying she started a small one in her office. She put out a coffee can with lid and took it home to dump each time it got full. I think it's a great way to start small and have been thinking about doing this in my office.
