Need book recs on composting plz!

My sister bought me this awesome, humongous composter for Christmas and I am clueless at what to do with it.  I didn't even know you couldn't put all your table scraps in there until she told that meats, pasta and some other things could NOT go into the composter.

I am a little intimidated by the whole thing and want to do it "right"; please recommend some books or other resources where I can read up so I can get the most from my composter.

TIA,

  • I would just read a few online articles. It's not complicated enough for a whole book IMO. Plug some stuff into google and go for it. :-)

Ditto.  Google "what can I compost?" and I'm sure you'll find a list.  Meat, dairy, and grease should not be composted b/c they smell, can turn rancid, and attract animals.  Pretty much all food scraps, leaves, grass clippings, clean shredded cardboard, and a bunch of other stuff is fine.  Get a compost pail, throw your carrot peels and pepper tops and whatnot in there. Every few days take it to your composter bin, mix everything that's in the composter together (this is "turning your compost") and add some water.  If you make sure your composter is in a sunny area, you'll have gorgeous black compost in a few months.  It goes faster if you put in a 50/50 mix of "greens and browns." So make sure you have enough grass clippings, leaves and shredded cardboard or paper to even out your food scraps.

Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • and in case this is intimidating... I'm crappy at keeping up with the stirring and checking the moisture level. I mostly dump and leave it and it still turns out fine (just slower), so it's hard to screw up :-)
